I have 6 rasboras and several small snails that came in on a plant. Loach next? Eventually I’d like to add a Dwarf Gourami. Thanks!

I have nitrates. I’ll attach a photo. To be honest I’ve been only testing ammonia and nitrites regularly and waiting for ammonia to read 0ppm. I had been doing daily water changes, 20-50% depending of ammonia levels, but the ammonia has been stable at .25ppm for about a week and I was trying to...

    Little ammonia No Nitrite 2+months

Thank you for the advice! I’m still going and the rasboras appear happy and healthy. My ammonia has stayed at around .25ppm for about a week. No nitrites. I’m going to do a 20% water change today. I keep testing daily hoping to see nitrites/nitrates. Out of curiosity, what situations can crash...

Thx. I’ll do that. Any insight as to why I’m not getting it cycled? Should I clean the algae etc off the substrate, rock decorations, or tank sides or leave it? Should I replace my filter cartridge or leave it? It doesn’t look bad but it’s been in there since I re-started the tank a couple...

I’m seeing .5 and 1ppm of ammonia daily. Changing water 20% when I see .5 and doing 50% when I see 1ppm. No nitrite

    .5and 1ppm. No nitrates yet.

Still no nitrites. I’m doing daily 25% or every other day 50% tank changes. Leaving the substrate to grow/not vacuuming. Can’t believe how long it’s taking. 6 rasboras are hanging in there. Whenever I see one not with the school I test and do water change based on ammonia amount. Come on...

    Little ammonia No Nitrite 2+months

Hi. Checking in. We’re getting lots of ammonia, 1ppm/day and also doing 50% water changes basically every day with the 1ppm ammonia. We had gotten a few water lettuce plants and apparently they had snails on them. We have lots of little snails now in the tank that I’m guessing are raising the...

Thank you Aiken! I’ll look into a black background. Update: I continue to do water changes regularly to keep ammonia down. No nitrites yet. Thanks!

PH hard to lower Thx. Did 50% water change and have ammonia at .25ppm. Still zero nitrite. Checking regularly. Also, I’ve been using PH Down but can seem to get it to go down under 7.6.

Still no nitrite Thx. That all makes sense about media. My ammonia is around 1ppm. Still 0 nitrite. Fish are happy.

    Little ammonia No Nitrite 2+months

I thought adding ‘media’ to the tank from a trusted source was similar to adding water from a trusted tank. So far so good but won’t do that again. Rasboras are happy on day 3 of being in tank. Fingers crossed they stay happy and healthy! Thx

.25 ammonia no nitrite If I have .25ppm of ammonia and 0ppm nitrite should I still do a 20% water change? Thx!

Rasboras in the tank I just added 3 rasboras, one and only and about 1/2 gallon of aquarium water from the fish store (same tank the rasboras came from). I’ll follow your recommendations for a light feeding cycle and regular water changes based on ammonia and nitrites. Great to have fish in...

So much to learn Thx again. Just drained tank but won’t clean substrate. Great timing on your reply. I thought I read clowns were better than yo-yo for 20 gallon but your advise makes sense. We’ll plan to start with 3 rasboras. Should I add some one and only too?

Draining the tank Thx. I’m going to drain the tank and fresh water rinse my substrate then re-fill, condition and add two fish. We’d like to stock our 20 gallon with neon tetras/harlequin rasboras, clown loach, snail/ghost shrimp and a dwarf gourami (eventually) and plants. Excited to have...

New start Thanks again for the fantastic info and guidance. With restarting and adding a couple small fish, I have a 20 gallon, they can go in the new tap water with just a water treatment for chlorine etc? Also, with the current tank and having added the ammonia but never seeing it drop, even...

Starting over Hi. So what would starting over look like? I’m bummed but can’t keep an empty fish tank forever. Thanks!

Ammonia staying up Hi. Thank you both for the help! I’m definitely considering starting over and doing the cycle with fish. Thanks for the tips. I had heard fishless cycling is challenging but the directions from aquatic ammonia made it sound easier. I got my tank up to 2ppm ammonia yesterday...

Ammonia level Thank you. I originally got my ammonia up to 4ppm about 6 weeks ago. I saw some nitrites after that but they went away. Then I’ve just been waiting for my ammonia to zero out before adding more ammonia.I haven’t had nitrites in 4-5 weeks. Now I’m working to get to 2ppm as you...

Thank you!!! I really really appreciate the response and advice! I’m sure this question is answered many times in FAQ etc but got to the point where I needed to talk directly to the source! I added ammonia this morning and will give your advice a go. I like it! Otherwise I’m going to start over...
