    Dosage question (Water Conditioners)

Looks like I got this very wrong, thanks for correcting me! This is something I had read up on before, but there has been a lot of confounding information, boiling down to some studies not specifying whether 'ammonia' they are describing is free or total ammonia, while also there are plenty of...

    Dosage question (Water Conditioners)

Yeah I agree with the others. What we often refer to and test as 'ammonia' is better called 'total ammonia', which comprises a balance of 'free ammonia' and 'ammonium'. However, it is evidence that the free ammonia is what is toxic to fish, while ammonium does not seem to be. So when you read up...

    Dosage question (Water Conditioners)

Ah, so not too bad at all. How frequent have been your water changes? Oh and what's your pH by the way?

    Dosage question (Water Conditioners)

Prime is safe to dose up to 5x dosage, so likely you won't accidentally overdose on Prime, unless your ammonia/nitrite is super high and you are trying to counter them with Prime. What is your actual ammonia reading?

    Internal aquarium power filter?

Depends on the brand, and the size (i.e. if it was rated for said size tank) - more specifically the flow rate and the biomedia used.

    Overkill or Not?

You can certainly run two sponge filters together, it can be good as in case one fails the other is still there functioning, so yeah. Might be redundant, but not necessarily a bad thing.

    New freshwater fishless cycle trouble

Dr. Tim's One and Only is not known to work very well recently, over the last two years I have only gotten one report that it worked. I'd suggest FritzZyme TurboStart 700, or at least the less concentrated version, FritzZyme 7. Of course, that's if bottled bac products may work at all. The...

    New freshwater fishless cycle trouble

Yes, very much likely bacterial blooms, and likely the reason why you see no nitrite or nitrate. Ammonia can be consumed via multiple methods, one of them being as a nitrogen source for growth by microorganisms. In the presence of organic compounds, heterotrophic microorganisms can rapidly...

    New freshwater fishless cycle trouble

Just wanted to confirm, you are dosing pure ammonia (ammonium chloride or something similar) and not using fish food or whatever, right? Do you have any plants? Any algae or the likes growing? Any bacterial blooms?

Hi there! Glad to join the forum. A bit about me: I am super into aquarium-keeping, with my favourite fish to keep american cichlids. They are the best. XD
