    Barnacles

Last summer, we had a family vacation at a mid Atlantic coast beach. We brought home some barnacles on a small piece of driftwood. It's neat to watch their little feeding appendages come out and forage for microscopic food in the water. Are barnacles benifical in a SW tank ecosystem...

    Sponges

I have cycles in my SW tanks where lots of small sponges 1/4" to 3/4" long grow up and then die back (or are cleaned out by me). Are sponges good, bad, or indifferent in maintaining a healthy SW ecosystem?

    Macroalgae

Perhaps it could be fuchia. Here is a picture of that.

    Macroalgae

It's not slimy. If feels like a very delicate plant.

    Is this a pest?

I'm using an Emperor 280. I looked inside and saw these sponges all over the insides of the filter media cage. I scrubbed them out and totally cleaned the filter. I cleaned the sides of the glass and am about to do a 50% WC. Glad the sponges are harmless. Thanks for the replies.

    Macroalgae

This red stuff sponaneously grew up among my macroalgae. I really like the color that it adds, but i'm wondering what it is, and whether there are any harmful side effects

    Is this a pest?

Lots of these appeared mysteriously in my SW tanks. They look like elongated whitish tubes that anchor on things. At the same time these appeared, my macroalgae started shrinking instead of growing. Are they sponges? Are they harmful?

    Wattley on Discus

What do you think it would be for 6 discus in a 55g tank? I was thinking about getting them at 3" and growing them up and having them pair off in that tank.

    Pros and cons of Diatoms

It is a fairly new tank. I've always wondered why newer tanks tend to do this so much more than old tanks. I think there are more diatoms than an otto could eat in a life time. I haven't done anything yet since I didn't consider it to be very harmful. At this point, the diatom volume...

    Loaches

For the past week I've removed approximately 100 snails per day in my 55 and 150 gallon tanks and they just keep coming. At first, I thought the snails were cute and would be ok, but one day I looked in my 150g and it looked like a lawn mower had been through mowing the plants and leaving...

    Loaches

That sounds interesting. Did the yoyos school or were they more or less independent? How big did they grow in the 2 years? Do you know if kuhli loaches are effective on snails?

    Pros and cons of Diatoms

Fortunately, these are mostly free floating Anacharis. I can take the plants out, rinse the diatoms off, and put them back in the tank. I just didn't want to do it if the diatoms were benefiting the fry.

    Loaches

I have been considering getting some loaches to fight snail outbreaks. I even wanted to consider beeding them I went on Loaches.com and my findings so far have included: 1. Most loaches seem to grow too big for tanks: Clown loach: 16 inches, Weather loach 10 inches, Yoyo loach 6 inches...

Why Does My Water Sprite Crash?

I really like my water sprite because it grows and reproduces prolifically. I can use it to fill in my tanks. But I have a problem. It grows up vibrant and healthy and then, at seemingly random times, and in random tanks, the vibrant stalks die back. They die back and new healthy ones grow...

    Pros and cons of Diatoms

I have a guppy fry tank with diatoms. The diatoms are starting to cover some of the plants. Can the guppies benefit from the diatoms by eating them or hiding in them? Do the diatoms damage the plants in any way other than shading them if they grow too much?

    Wattley on Discus

Through Craigslist, I sold some fancy guppies to a guy last weekend who had been in the TFH circles and knew Jack Wattley and some of the others. The guy I sold the guppies to had been a long time discus raiser and had supplied the LFSs in the area. He thought 40-50%/day was overly high and...

Thanks. I do that when I can, but not 100% of the time.

    Diatoms

I have well established tanks that never have diatoms. I have newer tanks where they get on the walls and on some of the plants. Why are newer tanks prone to getting diatoms, and is there any way to speed up the process of getting to the clearer diatomless tank?

    Canister filters

Hmmm. That sounds very interesting. I don't have a lot of experience with canister filters, but I was thinking the gunk in the lines would include a high concentration of beneficial bacteria. Do you think this might be true? Also, I've never had a canister filter that had the caps on both...
