Irrid. Shark, fin rot, can't seem to cure

Regular salt... like sea salt for tanks?

Irrid. Shark, fin rot, can't seem to cure

Tanks has one filter, draws from the bottom of tank but not under gravel (Penguin 300). Has two cartridge type filters with charcol andf fiber anout 6"x6" each. I change the pads about once every month and a half or two with a light wash out in between when I do a water change. As of late...

Irrid. Shark, fin rot, can't seem to cure

My water changes in past years were not as frequent. However, the fish (there used to be two) did very well for years. When I first started to have issues with one, it was suggested that I start monitoring nitrates and nitrites - it was then that I noticed they were on the high side. Lately...

Irrid. Shark, fin rot, can't seem to cure

I have an irridescent shark who is suffering form fairly severe fin rot that I can't seem to cure. (FYI - he's the only fish in the 30H tank; He had a buddy but his buddy passed away over the Winter. He's about 5 years old). He's had fin rot before, but I think that was a result of bad...

Iridescent Shark - turning clear and brn-red?

I'll try. Capturing him will be difficult.... when he's up, he's usually moving. When he's sleeping, he's down in a gully where I can't photo him very easily. FYI - I've been working the PH back to neutral. He seems to be more active and his color is better, but not really "normal" yet in...

Iridescent Shark - turning clear and brn-red?

Maybe nutrition... perhaps I should broaden their diet. As for old age: my oldest irridescents lived until they were 22, so I am hoping these guys have a way to go.

Iridescent Shark - turning clear and brn-red?

Yeah... I don't hand wash them :-) Partial water change, clean tank sides. Filter is changed on alternating schedule at least a week from any water change. This guy is really getting clear in color, I'd rate him as "translucent".

Iridescent Shark - turning clear and brn-red?

30 gal tank, two freshwater iridescent sharks (only), nitrates ~20 nitrates ~.5 PH 7.2. Last water change about a week ago. Fish are about 6 years old. They've been doing good lately, no fin rot. Active and eating regularly. I noticed that one of them has been getting lighter (less black...

Irridescent Sharks, Recurring Fin Rot (over and over)

Just following up... started with a 25% change as suggested and a reasonable amount of vacuuming. Nitrates came down to 30 so I went to a 50% change last time with a more serious vacumming. Fish are steadilly improving, fins are almost back to normal for both. It's been a few days since the...

Irridescent Sharks, Recurring Fin Rot (over and over)

Nitrates are .40. Last water change was about 5 days ago, 25%.

Irridescent Sharks, Recurring Fin Rot (over and over)

Followup question: Should all the cleanings all be "full" cleanings where I use the siphon vac to get right down into the gravel, or should some of them alternate to be more of just a "standing water" change. Also, instead of doing a (example) 25% change once a week, would it be better to do...

Irridescent Sharks, Recurring Fin Rot (over and over)

Do you really think the tank size is an issue? These guys are only about 5" long, and there are only the two of them in there. They really seem to have plenty of room at this point. I will get a nitrate test kit and check that as I only have the nitrite kit right now. ANSWER to PH QUESTION...

Irridescent Sharks, Recurring Fin Rot (over and over)

Hmmm.... my chemistry knowledge is weak - I use a test kit that says "NH3/NH4+" and in the details says it tests for NH3 and NO2. It mentions Ammonia and "ideal nitrification". I see the numbers I posted originally were wrong, it measures to an ideal 0.0 level, not 0.25 as I originaly posted. Do...

Irridescent Sharks, Recurring Fin Rot (over and over)

I've had a problem with Fin Rot over and over again lately. Tanks specs below, only two fish in the tank. One fish has lost 50% of each side of his tail and the other about 20% in the current cycle. I treated the fish with Jungles "Fungas Clear" (two cycles of about 5 days duration) and it...
