Fish are very adaptable to different levels of pH. Have you tested for other things like ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, etc.?
A stable pH > a more ideal but unstable pH
Be careful with any rocks you collect. They may leach certain chemicals once placed in the tank; you never know. Better to be safe than sorry.
I think some rocks would go good with the shipwreck. Maybe gray-colored rocks. And I think sand would look better with it than gravel.
I don't think a 5 gal is enough space for a school of tetras.
What about a betta? You could do a betta and some shrimp.
Or maybe a couple of Endlers instead of a betta.
You're not going to find new tanks over 180 gallons that aren't costly. Check your newspaper and craiglist.
