    Yet another DIY Sump/Refugium Plan!

Ok, here's the situation. My parents went away on a week's vacation, and... they left the keys to the brand new porsche... oh wait... wrong forum and decade. Ha. Right. So I'm planning out a 90G sump/refugium for a 180G in-wall tank. What I hope to get out of the refugium is nutrient...

    temp..

Home Depot Lowes etc. Right next to ceiling tiles usually. There's both plain white and silver. Dunno how safe the silver stuff is to use around salt though. I hang it around my RO system to keep the cat away from those nice soft chewy airline tubes. -Yanek.

    Tank In Wall Project

SO. A call for help. Anyone who's done an in-wall aquarium in the CORNER of a room so that it's visible from other rooms on 2 sides? I'm trying to figure out exactly what it will take to frame out around the corner properly...

    Wanted: 75G glass/acrylic tank

I need a 75G tank. Acrylic would be preferable, but glass will do. I'm doing some odd tank juggling and I need it for temporary storage. :-\

    180 gallon lighting

What a great link; I'll check that out. I'm starting to talk to contarctors how about doing the dirty work. I'll probably go 3x400W plus a pair of SmartLamps.

    cyano..cyano..cyano..!@#$$!!!

I had a major cyano problem a couple of weeks ago. The following was my non-chem method of removal (75G) bought about 20 assorted snails (astrea/nass/marg), 2 mexican turbos bought about 20 blue legged hermits, 5 striped hermits, 5 red legs Returned my fish (clown, 3 bluegreen chromis) to the...

How long did it take your tank to cycle?

When I rebuilt my tank, I had it cycled after 11 days. I used a spray (not a whole lot -- 5 llbs) of existing live sand, some existing live rock, a lot of new live rock, and some existing water (20 G?) for my 75G. Monitored closely every day, performed water changes and ran my skimmer. I...

    Sump blockage disaster

So I went down to my tank the other day, heard a strange noise before I even got there. My first squishy step into the fish room made it clear there was a problem. So I've got a small 15G or so sump; pump is on the left and what would be the wet/dry part is on the right. I had a fairly fine...

    unhappy zoos, cyano

One fine day, my pinpoint ph meter went out. Low battery; oh well, my ph had been steady at 8.2 for quite a while so I wasn't worried. Everything in the tank was happy as can be. Then, another fine day my skimmer pump went out. Took me a week and a half to get it replaced. By that time, my...

    120 gal setup

Well in general it's best to use two heaters not one. As yet I have no experience with anything but Visi-Therm heaters ... the one I have (300W) has been super reliable for five years now. I just ordered a new one... http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idProduct=WB1317 (oh crap, I...

Starting a SW Tank...here are my plans

low maintenance 29G saltwater ... that's a tough thing to do! As far as anemones go, many like ample light, and they're adamant about water quality. Mine likes a sand bed at least 5" deep (mine's 6").

cobwebs in the tank; corals puking?

Seeing as I was out of town; replying was difficult... heheeh. Still reading through the thread. Definitely the sessile snails. It looked like a feeding frenzy, but it was odd... Betcha it was detritus being stirred up in the sump and blown back about the tank.

cobwebs in the tank; corals puking?

So I've had a reef tank for about five years now and have moved it from one house to another. So I'm not a n00b, but at times I wish I could just slow down and think more. I'm decidedly lazy. So much so that I do water changes in my 75G about once a month... sometimes it's gone two months or...

    180 gallon lighting

Well I'm still confused on this. I've been reading and reading and having used PCs for 5 years I still don't get all the differences in MH bulbs. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg if I can help it, and it looks to me that I will need at least 3 400W MH bulbs and perhaps I can use a pair...

    Need YOUR opinion on SmartLamps

Well the trouble I'm trying to solve is that my tank ends up with some more "reddish" spots and some more "bluish" spots with all 4 PCs on. I was going for more even color distribution. I do dawn and dusk with a pair of lights (1 10k, 1 actinic) and then bump it up to two pairs for full...

    Need YOUR opinion on SmartLamps

I've been using 4 96W CFs over my 75G for several years now and they've been working very well for every kind of coral I've tried so far (leathers, SPS, LPS, anemone, etc). I'm thinking of SLIGHTLY changing how I do things. Specifically, right now I'm using 2 10k coralife bulbs and 2 7100k...

    Anemone problems

My long tentacle, purple tip has been with me for some time now... about 5 years and has moved plenty through then, including between houses. Right now he's got his foot through 5" of sand to the tank base. He used to like it up on a rock (see my avatar).

do water changes delay cycling? will it make cycling LONGER?

When I re-started my tank after "the move" <shudder>... I used some LR from my old tank, much LR from the LFS, mostly new sand and CC in a DSB and some live sand from my old tank. Water was all new. I didn't run the skimmer during cycling. I did water changes every day for the first five days...

    Terrified Tang & New Additions

Hmmm... I had a similar problem with my unicorn tang when I got it. It would hide in the rock, often sidways ALL THE TIME. We were concerned that it might not appreciate the 75G (found out later it liked tanks 120G or larger). Well here we are a month and a half later and it, along with the...

    Tank In Wall Project

When I got the table, I intentionally put the head rail (short side, FROM which you break) closest to the tank, that way you'd always be breaking AWAY from the tank. Now, if someone uses a lot of force in a tankular direction, that could cause problems. In 2 years, I haven't seen it happen...

    Tank In Wall Project

We're talking about tempered glass here, right? Hmm... what about protective measures? Is there something I can do to protect the tank from someone throwing a cue ball at the tank, for instance?

    180 gallon lighting

I'm planning a tank-in-wall setup and as yet have not decided what size tank I'm going to have. Either a 120 or a 180... cost will play a factor as always. And one of the cost factors is lighting. I have a 75G right now with 4 96W PCs, two super white, two actinic. Haven't tried the...

    Tank In Wall Project

Heh, yeah there was one nightmare thread in particular I remember reading. Something about contractor delays... it's an ongoing thing. So perhaps if I do it myself and get people who are honestly interested in saltwater aquaria & interested in DIY I'll get a project that will move smoothly and...

    What temp is good?

At the risk of being scolded, my tank never gets below 79 degrees. Usually it runs 85.5, sometimes 86. 4 96W compact flourescents, dsb, lots of LR, 75G. My various fish, anemone, mushrooms, polyps, leathers, nepthia, brain, frogspawn, and various montipora are all doing very well. My...
