hey big daddy. sorry for the delay. the wood is called AC plywood. picked it up at Lowes. i honestly don't care for the wood and i'd recommend spending the extra money on genuine birch or oak ply. the trim is ur basic molding stuff. just make sure u get a molding that will take a stain.

been an up and down week in this aquarium. the plants aren't fairing well. i think it is partly do to my substrate, but more so because my glass tops are so clouded that the light isn't getting through. i think i will move the hatchets to my daughter's 20g, and take the glass tops off. hopefully...

so now for the next volley of questions...but first a pic of what i have to work with. it is a 125g tempered glass w/ 1 emperor 400, and 2 280's. as u can see i have plenty of rock. now i am assuming that the nitrifying bacteria for salt tanks is the same or similiar enough to freshwater...

really appreciate the input guys. after reading the article, i'm thinking i won't have the time to invest in a reef tank. perhaps in a few years. seems a bit overwhelming for one who hasn't done salt. so a FO or FOWLR is still a valid option. but...i have a tank already full of lava rock, so...

hmmmm...won't the reef benefit from the minerals in the tap water? if i have to use R/O then i'll prolly stick w/ freshwater.

i had been planning a 125g cichlid tank, but now i'm toying around w/ the idea of a reef tank. here's the kicker...i have all this lava rock in the tank, and i'm wondering if it is a good base for a reef?:confused: also have black tahitian moon sand for substrate. any problems there??

jeez, i don't know fish eggs. between trips to the store and labor, prolly over 15. the frame is fairly simple to put together. it's the trim and staining that sucks up all the time.

i also agree w/ the fishless cycle, but i have to test for problems w/ the last silicone, which i don't think will be an issue, as cleaned everything pretty well. the last silicone did apparently have some form of mildewcide in it. the fish are not in yet. i will transfer over all the used...
