    Crappy Cardinals

Cardinals Hi Allivimar, I am on the west coast of Canada and cannot get any cardinals from anyof my fish suppliers. They just aren't shipping them right now because of the problems everyone has been mentioning. IF the ones you can get are local tank bred I would go for it (even at 5$ plus...

    FW Parrotfish?

Hybrid or not, I think they are a great fish. They get along with everyone including much smaller fish. They are also able to take care of themselves aginst more agressive fish like Oscars. I have a pair in a 33 gallon community tank and a very large pair in my 500 gallon tank along with 3 full...

    OMG!!!!!

As the owner operator of a small LFS, I agree that shame on him for giving advice on something he obviously did'nt know about. BUT I disagree with the statement that MOST LFS employees are guilty...... I, and my one staff member have over 70 years experience between the two of us. It is a...

If you get a "bad" fish, do you help it, or return

returning fish SoCal, I'm sure glad I don't have deviant customers like you. I have a small local fish store and have a generous 10 day guarantee on all our fish. Unless the water paramaters are WAY out of line I honour the guarantee regardless. Believe me, all LFS owners are not cheats looking...

what types of fish has bitten you?

Bitten I have been bitten several times while feeding my large Oscars. Just last week I was bitten by my large Jack Dempsey while feeding him. On that same day while cleaning the glass in the tank my 36 inch Silver Arrowana snuck up on me and bit me on my wrist. He didn't bite down too hard and...

    *bangs head on wall*

Hi, Good rule. I agree with that in general. We always tell customers that after they have aclimatized the fish in the bag and mixed their water into the bag to net the fish out and dispose of our water. For a brand new tank, though, (and person does not want to go through the waiting game)......

Bio-Spira/Cycle I own a small LFS and so far have been unable to get Bio-spira. It sounds terrific and I am still trying to get it. I have always used cycle and have never had any problems. However....a real good way to get your tank up and running (and cycled) is to get your LFS involved...

    High Ammonia.....

ammonia After a 50% water change and still no change in your ammonia, I would suspect the test kit! Check the expiry date and even if it is not expired have your LFS do a test you. The level should have gone down considerably. :?:

    FAT female sword

She could possibly have been having trouble giving birth. With egglayers, they can get egg bound, with live bearers several fry could get sideways in the vent, stopping the natural path for "birthing". This can kill the mother quite quickly.

Rams! At Petco??!? What do I do NOW?

I have a smal LFS and my three banks of tanks each have a common "sump". Most systems like this have safeguards. In my case I have the three circulating systems with sumps, undergravel filters (except in the cichlid bank) and three UV sterilizers. I certainly can't afford to have a disease...

    Wash Filter

Hi TechBoy, If you mean wash the filter media in your filter..yes you should. However, only wash (rinse) it out in the water you have taken out of your tank during a water change. The foam, or sponge, in the filter can be washed many times. If you are using carbon it can be re-used only a few...

AAHHH! I still need a good filter!!!

A good cleaner and completely noise free is the new Fluval plus filters. They go right in the tank.

Can you use PVC Pipe? And how to clean it to add to you tank

Hamster tubes Yes the hamster tubes can be used in your tank.I have several of them in mine.

    Cloudy water?

Yes, the cucumber Could be the problem. If the "cloudy" is a whiteish colour you probably have a Bacterial bloom. I would suggest a 25% water change and the use of Cycle (or another similar product) I have also had some success with Hagens "B" Clear. When you use something like cucumber or...

Whoah!! How in the heck did this happen!?!?!?

When I sell live plants from my LFS I always give them a dip in a strong solution of Salt water. That will kill most of the hidden eggs.

    Do ciclids NEED bubble walls?

What kind of cichlids, what size, and how many? Also how big a tank. type of filter, etc.

    set up for cichlids...

Convicts will certainly "rearrange" the gravel in their tank. You should use all gravel with lots of caves and other hiding places. If you have a pair of convicts they will start to spawn pretty soon. All other fish in the tank will be in trouble at this point if they don't have room to run and...

    10 gal tank cycling question

An Apple snail is a real good idea. These big guys do a real good job on algae and on "gunk" on the bottom. Be sure to have a good lid on the tank as these snails will escape. Apple snails require 2 sexes in the tank to have babies. ...they will also lay their eggs above the surface of the water...

    freshwater eels

reed fish yes , a reedfish and rope fish are the same. They are also pretty nice. Be carefull though as they are escape artists

    Power outage question?

If the power goes out, for several hours, all the good bacteria in all types of filters (bio, UG, and HOB) will die without oxygen. What I use is a battery charger (always plugged in), a good marine battery connected to the charger and a power inverter attached to that. I have my large air pumps...

    scratched glass, ugh

How about an Acrylic tank with scratches. I have a 90 Hex that is BADLY scratched in and out. Is there a product out there that will clean it up?

    Rope fish and Oscars

I feed my three full grown oscars largenight crawlers. A rope fish, I have two in another tank, look fairly similar. Believe me.. a full size Oscar will look at it as a "worm" as well. Also Rope Fish do like to come to dry land once in a while. Mine have an Island in the tank and quite ofter...

    Dragonfish???

OK folks..I try to keep my cool when I hear things like "another uniformed LFS clerk". MOST of us are informed and would not sell anything as described above. Yes there are uninformed LFS clerks. Try to find a LFS that DOES have the proper knowledge. I would take our V.Gobies back to where you...
