    Plecostumus Close-Up

Thanks everyone! (S)he finally sat by the glass, sitting still long enough for me to grab a nice macro shot!

    Tank Suffering Swim Bladder

It has come to my attention that two of my fish are showing symptoms of Swim Bladder. Two have died already. Is there anything I can do to prevent the rest of my fish from getting it? I've read that once my fish have it, there's no stopping it from spreading to the rest of the tank. If this is...

    Platy Headed for Peril

I get those two mixed up too! I actually had to look it up to be sure. She has just passed. I would still like suggestions on what it may have been though in case whatever it was is contagious and my other fish start to show the same symptoms!

    Platy Headed for Peril

I've had Platies for a year now, on my second generation! My pH has never changed and they were fine all the while before. My test only goes up to 7.5, and that's what color it matched. It may be that number or above, not sure. I have the carbon filter (not the bio bag) from the old tank and...

    Plecostumus Close-Up

Here is Ernie, my Plecostumus. Might be an Ernita though, not sure!

    Platy Headed for Peril

She has just passed but I would like suggestions on what may have been wrong with her in case my other fish start to show the same symptoms. She was a white platy that had suddenly gone pale in color and swam strangely. On her side, upside down sometimes, running into plants and the glass, etc...

    Platy Discoloration

Well she died today. I still don't know what was wrong with her. I dropped food above her when she was breathing at the surface last night and she actually ate it so I don't know what's going on there. I'm just assuming she got sick or something and my aggressive female did not help at all...

    Platy Discoloration

Yeah I have a bowl I could put her in. What's the best way to siphon gravel from a bowl? Should I get a smaller vacuum or is there a way around it? My biggest concern is that she won't eat. That's a sure sign of disease but I can't find anything that her symptoms are leading to.

    Platy Discoloration

I do water changes every two to two and a half weeks and I last did one on the 25th of July. The only thing new is a breeding net which is holding babies, but it has been in there for several weeks. There was a batch of new babies that I missed and I found only one survivor but they're not her...

    Platy Discoloration

I have a platy that is extremely extremely pale, almost sickening to look at actually. She won't eat either. She is half actively swimming and half sitting around the bottom in one place. I can't find anything online about a disease with these symptoms combined while all four other fish are...

    Okay thank you both!

    Gravel to Sand

I saw another thread on this but my situation is slightly different. I want to switch from gravel to sand in my ten gallon tank and add a real plant. My tank is not fully cycled though. Should I wait until it's fully cycled to make this kind of change? And for the future, what type of sand...

    ich and weather loach

Okay, I'll get suggestions from the pet stores around here. After yesterday's water change I've noticed that some of the spots on the fish went away. I'm going to assume for now that it was due to my ammonia spike. I haven't seen even one fish 'flash' today. Thanks!

    New fish

I have a 50w heater, it just automatically heats to a temperature no lower than 75 and no higher than 80. So I can't raise it to the temperature which will kill the parasites. I will start searching for a new heater soon, thanks!

    New fish

Okay that is reasonable if it will save my fish! No nitrites whatsoever. There was an ammonia spike, but a very small one. It went from 0 to between .5 and 1ppm. It was not closer to either color but if I had to choose what I thought it more closely resembled, I would choose 1ppm. This was...

    New fish

Yes, the spots aren't visible until you get very very close to them and actually look for them. It's a ten gallon tank that is 20 inches long by 10 inches wide by 12 inches high. I did a partial water change and I did water tests today and nothing was different except my pH which lowered...

How Do I Start Siphoning Water?

I just did this today! What I found difficult to deal with was a kink in the hose from the packaging. I had to squeeze the sides to get water through. I also had to make sure that most, if not all, of the tubing was facing downward and had no loops where the water would have to move upward...

    New fish

I have six platies and a loach. Three of the platies are showing slight signs of ich although it could be velvet. Or it could be, hopefully, nothing. Mom says I'm just a paranoid new owner but even if I am, it's better to be safe than sorry. All six platies are 'flashing' but there's no good...

    ich and weather loach

Lynda and Zagz, this thread has given me hope! I have six platies and a loach. Three of the platies are showing slight signs of ich although it could be velvet. Mom says I'm just a paranoid new owner but even if I am, it's better to be safe than sorry. All six platies are 'flashing' but...

Purrbox, can you be more specific on the borrowed filter material I should add when I add my fish?

    Water hardness/alkalinity

SpeedEuphoria- I do have an ammonia test kit, but I don't have anything in my tank that would change anything involving ammonia yet. That's what I was looking into fish for. I researched hardy starter fish and Red Wag Platies was one of the possibilities. As for the ropefish, I have read in...

    Water hardness/alkalinity

Here are my new test results. pH - 7.6+ High Range pH - 8.2 Nitrate - 0 Nitrite - 0 I plan on purchasing API Proper pH so I can maintain a preset pH level that isn't so high. I haven't yet decided on a cycling fish breed but I'm leaning towards a few Red Wag Platies. What pH level would best...

    Water hardness/alkalinity

melosu58- My nitrite and nitrate levels are at perfect places but I have no way to test for ammonia as of yet. I'm going to the pet store today to research some fish and I'll search for ammonia tests. And thanks for the welcome! Purrbox- As stated above, I have no way to test my ammonia...

    Water hardness/alkalinity

I'm not sure if this is in the right place, but I'm just getting started so I thought it might fit. I have a little ten gallon tank with no fish! I've been cycling it for two days now and everything is flowing smoothly. I tested the water yesterday and the hardness of my water was very hard...
