is my yellow tail damsel killing my fish???

Damsels are the devil. Those suckers tore a hole in my clown trigger and countless other fish. It's possible for them to kill fish. With the presence of nitrates and added stress from the harassment of the damsel, it's very possible for the victim's immune system to become compromised and...

    returning to petco

I'm pretty sure Petco has a 15 day fish guarantee but that's for dead fish. Why not try and call them first? Might save you a trip and a headache. Use a large ziplock bag with plenty of water AND oxygen. Just like they do in the store, don't fill the bag up all the way with water.

    How many snails?

Promiscuous little suckers. Start off with a small amount (2-4) and if you need/want more, then that's more reason for you to take another trip to the LFS ;)

    Clean up crew?

Sometimes I think people go overboard with their CUC. +1 for nassarius snails. They're detrivores and will clean the substrate of waste and excess food. Plus they're fun to watch when you feed the tank. I'm not a fan of hermit crabs, though. They irritate my coral, but they are a nice...

    Green mandarin

+1. Saltwaterfish.com is the BOMB. I usually place one big $250+ order a year to capitalize on the free shipping. They guarantee their livestock, and with my carelessness I've had to hold them to it a few times. 110% satisfied with saltwaterfish.com

Think I may have moved a little too fast

When they say "speed up the cycle" it means it jumpstarts it. It doesn't necessarily makes the actual process faster. Just give it time to cycle, maybe if you have a spare 10 gallon tank or so lying around you could set it up for quarantine until the other tank is done cycling. The quarantine...

    SW to FW ??????

I've heard people like to soak their tanks in vinegar. I just rinse it with water a few times. You can "kill" the live rock by placing it out in the sun to dry out for a day then soaking it with fresh water again.

    Green mandarin

You have to buy their products from a retailer like LiveAquaria or Saltwaterfish.com. Of course, it's more expensive due to the inclusion of the "middle man."

    Lemonpeel angelfish

I had a lemon peel with a coral eating habit. The ONLY solution is to buy ANOTHER tank, make it a FOWLR, and enjoy :) That's what I did anyway. It took my angel 3 days to come out of hiding and eat. They're beautiful fish, you should post a picture.

    10g coral hotel tank

You probably won't even need to worry about placement. That's plenty of light. Watch the water paramaters closely though. Zoos and shrooms can get messy over time. And keep the LPS spaced out, but you probably already know that. Don't want a biological war going on in your 10g.

Auto top off system and tap water?

That was my way of saying I'd rather drink RO/DI than tap :D Seriously, don't drink it.

    10g coral hotel tank

You're spot on. I'd leave it out. Anyway, the live rock may contain some algae that you're trying to get rid of, get on the coral, and re-seed your tank. Some small plastic crates fashioned into racks would be even better if you're worried about placement. What kind of coral are we talking...

    10g coral hotel tank

There shouldn't be a huge release of ammonia from coral unless you do a lot of spot feeding, so a cycle may not occur while you battle the algae. The zooxanthellae residing within the coral will take in most of the waste reducing the amount excreted into the environment. In the event the...

    Green mandarin

I've had one for about 2 years now. They're the easiest fish to keep (provided you keep their food source in healthy supply). I re-seed my tank with copepods every 4 months. Keep the tank healthy and your livestock peaceful, non-aggressive fish and you'll be able to enjoy your mandarin for...

Auto top off system and tap water?

Have you tried drinking RO/DI water? It's way better than straight tap water. Some cities can get away with using tap water depending on the way the water in their area is treated. In my experience an RO/DI unit is the best investment I've made. Removes a lot of the impurities and chemical...

Think I may have moved a little too fast

Presence of ammonia and lack of nitrides/nitrites is a good clue the tank hasn't had proper time to mature and complete the cycle. How big of a tank are we talking btw?
