Possible to sex this oscar and Jag?

Jag is about 2-3+ years old, oscar is roughly a year. Any ideas? I'm really curious. oscar: https://gfycat.com/DefinitiveZestyLangur managuensis: https://gfycat.com/UltimateDimpledAquaticleech

    JD sexing

https://gfycat.com/HeftyComposedAfricanparadiseflycatcher I know for sure the 3 larger are males, as I've had them for a while now, but the smallest is the one in question. I got it about 5 months ago at maybe 2 3/4 inches. It's just under 4" now. I bought it thinking it was a male, but as...

    Stocking

A single Red Devil/Midas or Oscar in a 75g would be fine. They get large, are very curious of their surroundings (inside and outside the tank), and will "eat goldfish" for your amusement. I wouldn't recommend doing that so often though, or at all. They offer nothing in terms of nutrition and can...

    Male Firemouth not eating

I'd disagree with american cichlids. It's usually okay for africans, but americans are a lot more territorial. Africans will chase in an overstocked tank, americans will kill until theyre comfortable with it's inhabitants, which could results in just 3 fish left or none.

    Jack dempseys

What size tank are these all in? JDs being light tends to mean they are stressed, probably from all those other aggressive african cichlids in there. I added a 7" JD to a tank with a smaller 5" male. He lightened up after his flaring had no effect on the larger, and after a few days once the 5"...

    Male Firemouth not eating

If he's spitting it out it sounds like he's just picky. Keep feeding and once he gets hungry enough he'll start to eat. I had to do that with a stubborn flowerhorn that wanted only bloodworms. Took almost 2 weeks before she started to chew and swallow pellets. After 2+ weeks if he still isn't...

    55 gallon JD tank

Should be fine. They tend to stop at 8", and that takes years. Smaller fish that can take aggression but wont challenge the JD, such as a convict or firemouth would be ok. I kept mine with a firemouth and convict for a while. JD was the boss. Anything similar sized or larger will create...

My new Red Devil/Midas: Mike Tyson

Yeah, sorry about that. I couldn't get any good shots (he wouldnt stop moving) so I just recorded a 10 second clip and uploaded it to a .gif site.

My new Red Devil/Midas: Mike Tyson

https://gfycat.com/UnhealthyMilkyCooter Does that work? It's a compressed .gif not a picture, maybe I had to add the /link tags. It's in a 40g for now, and about 3-4 inches. Should give me enough time to get a 55 if/when need be.

Opinions on cichlids for 50 gal

My "Elite" glass 55g is 49x13x18. I was surprised by it's odd dimensions as well. Most 55s are 48x12x21. I didn't mind it though, I'll take the extra inch in depth over 3 inches in height that won't be used as often anyway. 50 breeder will kind of limit you, but a 50g that is 4' will open up a...

What is the optimal temperature for CA & SA cichlids?

High 70s keeps them healthy and active. Lower 70s seem to cause them to mellow out a bunch, pretty much becoming lethargic. 76-79 would be great.

My new Red Devil/Midas: Mike Tyson

https://gfycat.com/UnhealthyMilkyCooter After losing my flowerhorn about a month ago, I decided it was time to finally move on. I've learned from my mistakes (lights will go on everyday, no more skipping 1-2 days a week feeding, lid has virtually no way to jump out, not teaching it to jump...

    Something wrong with jack dempsey?

Yeah, she should be fine in a 30g for a while. They definitely are slow growers, and the females average 5-7", with the rare 8"+ monster. As for her health, I'd think she's fine. It's probably just the bright gravel causing her to lighten up.

How much gravel do I need?

I have just barely enough pea gravel sized substrate to cover the bottom glass for my Dempseys. I'd say it's about 1/2". My largest one likes to dig craters around the tank, so it doesn't really matter.

    Something wrong with jack dempsey?

Looks female, and looks like she's on some very brightly colored gravel. Cichlids will change colors depending on the color of substrate and their surroundings. Is she alone? What size tank? Is there anything she's doing that look like she's sick?

Who has video of their SA/CA attacking the syphon

I love the thud it makes when it hits the siphon. Makes me miss my flowerhorn and want to get another. That is one beautiful fish you have there man.

Need Advice with my Jack Dempsey

Agreed, that is 100% a female JD. First of all, great job keeping her in good shape. She doesn't look deformed or appear to be sick, so you've been doing something right. Since you are on a budget, I wouldn't try plants. They will most likely be uprooted or destroyed, and not worth the risk...

Customize Aqueon 55/75 or Emperors with Fluval/Aquaclear media?

Yeah, I'm going to go with the Aqueon. I like the advertised 400 gph (probably closer to 250-350 with media inside, which is still great) and after looking at videos on youtube noticed it has quite a bit of room inside. I'm not going to use the cartridges at all, I'll just use a pre-filter on...

Can lights be too bright? Anything I can do to dim them?

Plants were out of the question as I have silver dollars. I ended up going back to the T5NO fixture, but increased the silver dollar school size from 3 to 5 and it seems to have calmed everyone down. The silver dollars aren't huddle in a corner anymore, rather are roaming the tank which is...

Customize Aqueon 55/75 or Emperors with Fluval/Aquaclear media?

I started looking at an additional method of water movement for my 55g. I have an AC110, which is great, but it's on the left side of the tank and I'd like to get a bit more water flow on the right side. It was also 85 bucks, so while I'd love to just get another 110, I'd rather go for a...

    Convict compatability

50/50. Depends on the temperament of the convict. I've seen them in community setups with smaller peaceful fish, and I've also seen them try and terrorize 4-8 foot tanks with aggressive fish that are 2-5 times larger than themselves. If you're really set on getting a convict, make sure you have...

Can lights be too bright? Anything I can do to dim them?

Ok well, looks like they really can be too bright. I put that T8 fixture on to experiment, and after 15 or so minutes of them hiding, they're all out in the open. Swimming back and forth, across the tank, cruising around. Looks like I'll have to find a T8 that can fit the entire tank now.

Can lights be too bright? Anything I can do to dim them?

I have a T5NO Aqueon strip for my 4 foot tank. It is a 3 foot strip, so depending on where I place it, it covers only 3/4 of the tank. The other day I moved it to the extreme left side of my tank, and have noticed all of my fish (silver dollars, JD, convict, firemouth) have moved to the...

What to do with my FM and JD?

Yeah, I haven't noticed any real difference in aggression anyway. I'll slowly increase it back to 78. I'm going to keep them in there for now (as there's never been damage) and hope the JD develops a backbone soon to stand up to the FM. I'll most likely upgrade to a 40 long, maybe a 55 if I...

What to do with my FM and JD?

78f his entire life, but in the last 2 weeks I've had it down to 72 to try and reduce his aggression to the JD.
