Starting sw aquarium for under $200 (X-mas gift)

Best thing to do, IMO, is save the money. Before you holler out and yell in protest let me explain. 1. Books will be among your most important investment, among them The New Marine Aquarium by Michael Paletta and The Consciencist Marine Aquarist by Robert Fenner. Buy used if you can but this...

    How much does it cost

As for cost, I'm at $36 a gallon for my 10G-working-at-becoming-a-nano-reef tank. Lighting and live rock are probably going to be your two biggest costs, ironically enough. A good protein skimmer will also be up there. No idea how hard the fish are to keep but I was surprised when I went home...

    Finally up!

I know. It's about time. ;) One thing I have come to realize in this hobby is things tend not to go fast nor as well as you think they should. The tank has been up and running now for almost two months. Started off with 10 lbs of beautiful Fiji rock and the following week added another five...

update: just helping a fellow reefer

Congrats! You'll have to buy the guy a case of beer as a thank you. :D

    SW beginner

Glad I could help you out! :)

    Southdown sand

I would use mostly Southdown and then add a couple pounds of LS from you LFS and try to get a cup or two off fellow reefers.

    A tank w/out LR??

Why not get some base rock (hirocks.com) and then add live rock to it? Should help cut down the cost. FFExpress, Marine Depot, and Tampa Bay Saltwater have good prices on LR. The LR and LS will act as your main filters. Another option could be DIY LR.

    Silly hydrometer question

No longer have to worry about that. Bought a refractometer. :)

    Interesting Facts....

Don't know if I agree with that one. Latest school of thought: Fish lack the brains to feel pain Concerned anglers and PETA should rest easy because, writing in the London Telegraph, Rajeev Syal reports that fish cannot feel pain. This was the conclusion of the largest study into piscine...

    CPR overflows

As well I have heard bad things about them. Could look into getting one from LifeReef for not much more.

Thoughts on the best Protein Skimmer?

Figure $201 total. For that you should be able to go with the Euro-Reef ES5.2. Of course, you may try to find a good used skimmer at either Ebay or Reef Central.

Thoughts on the best Protein Skimmer?

What sort of budget do you have to work with? You may want to look at one fromLifeReef, Euro-Reef, or Precision Marine as well.

Please take a look at my new plan

Go for the Remora skimmer. If not, the CPR Bac Pak II would be worth looking into. If you are going to have a sump, look at the Euro-Reef ES 5.2. Additionally, if you are looking at moving before the end of the year, why not stock up on dry goods for now? For example, you may decide to buy a VHO...

    sand questions

A poster on Reef Central said he found some Southdown Playsand at a Home Depot in North Carolina. It also may be under the Yard Right or Old Castle brand names.

    equipment check

Being in New Jersey, you should be able to find some Southdown, Old Town, or Yard Right tropical playsand at your local Home Depot.

    going away

Definately pay him something for this service. Have a step by step procedure of what to do daily. Would probably do a WC before you leave so this way he does not have to worry about it. Try and make it as easy for him as possible. Perhaps show him what you need to do daily and have him do it for...

Didn't rinse my Southdown well enough.

Allow the sand to settle. This can typically take as long as two weeks. Just be patient.

    Check my plan and budget

Marine Depot has excellent prices for dry goods along with probably the best shipping rates I've seen.

fishfreak, You truly do not have to go to such great lengths to do that. One thing that may work is linking to this website.

    Water Pressure & PC watts

You're very welcome! Still, for a $15 difference would get the Mag 7 over the Rio as it will, in all likelyhood, prove to be more reliable in the long run.

    Water Pressure & PC watts

These links should help some (though I am not sure how much): Pumps Friction loss, etc.

    Getting closer

As the 55G aquarium was put on hold for a while I am finally getting to where I can order stuff for it. My plans as of now are: 2 - MJ 1200 powerheads 1 - MJ 900 1 - Red Sea Wavemaker 2 - 75W Ebo-Jager heaters 1 - 48" 4 lamp VHO retrofit kit from Hellolights.com (2 super actinic and 2 Ultrasun...

    What was my Betta thinking?!

Don't feel bad. It took me 27 years. ;) (And I'm still only about halfway through ROTK. )

    In need of help!

Michael, Perhaps that link should be a sticky. :D

    Just started

Don't think I can be of much help here but I will try. Sticking with the 3W per gallon rule (if memory serves) you will likely want two 75W heaters for your tank. You will likely want a better protien skimmer, such as an Aqua C, and live rock, somewhere between 75 - 100lbs worth. You will...
