That sounds to me like the dead one was getting nipped at by the others. If they have little marks on them, it's not from running into things but rather getting nipped at by the dominant ones.

Yes- you get a good salt buildup with saltwater tanks, and even moreso than any mineral buildup with freshwater tanks. Just keep good maintenance with your tank and you should be fine.
I think you should go for it. That's the way I started. Read up on these forums and PM me if you have any questions or problems you can't get around. There are a lot of cool people on here willing to help, and they'll save you a lot of money as well!

First of all, I think it's great you are ready to take care of them. I have similar snails in my back yard. Do you have access to their source water? I'd get them a bigger place to live and add more of the water from where their from and have fun keeping them.
