Been about 3 months, so here are some updated shots of how my 29g reef is doing, particularly my nem and maroon clown =) some of these shots are under actinics only. my lighting is 1x250w MH + 4x24w T5HO Actinics, running with a 10g sump/fuge.

    vic's 29g reef build

Just got my SpectraPure 100gpd RO/DI unit in :) Luckily my tap outside has really good water pressure. It's creating some RODI water like a boss. Got some updated tank shots coming soon..my cycle has finally completed thanks to some wonderful LR I got from a fellow reefer!

    overflow/15g sump: tons of questions!

So I feel like every day I'm learning 20 new things when it comes to plumbing, overflows, sumps, and the likes. I started off with a 5.5g sump for a 29g tank, and realized how that was too small to handle my tank's size. I then moved on to a 10g, and due to poor baffle design and poorly...

Replacement ballast for 150w MH Odyssea fixture?

So long story short I'm pretty sure the ballast for my Odyssea MH just blew as it went "pop" and will no longer turn on. Can someone please recommend a replacement good quality ballast that does not cost an arm and a leg and is good quality? Would also appreciate recommendations on 150w double...

    vic's 29g reef build

Hey all, I had previously posted a couple of threads about building my new 29g and with many questions..well finally I am here to have my official build thread! I've learned a lot of new information although 2 weeks ago I THOUGHT I already knew everything I needed to know. A few hundred dollars...

Scratch the 10gal..29gal with 10g sump!

Advice taken..I've gone a different route and decided to "do it right" if you will. I got a brand new 29g Aqueon tank, old one had some scratches and I wasn't digging the oak look. Also went ahead and got a stand at PetSmart, one that fits..wait for it...a 10g sump! And of course reversed my...

Need help with sump: 5.5g for 29g..

So the pump didn't cut it with the head pressure. Have now ordered a Mag3 and will be waiting for it to arrive before the sump gets hooked up.

Need help with sump: 5.5g for 29g..

I just built up all the piping/tank compartments today. Cut up all my PVC, got my overflow installed, and siliconed in my cut acrylic. Tomorrow I'll be cementing the PVC pipes and letting the sump dry another 48 hours. Being the first time handling silicone and being in such a tight space made...

Going hob protein skimmer and fuge only in sump.

Need help with sump: 5.5g for 29g..

Thank you. I've decided to go with an Octopus HB100F HOB Skimmer, and then for my sump go with a design as attached, added measurements since I'm starting to understand how this works. I would not have any mechanical filtration in the sump, basically just the fuge, bubble trap, and return...

Need help with sump: 5.5g for 29g..

Sump seems like a good solution for filtration. I like the idea of added water volume for better water stability and being able to hide my heater in there and whatnot. That is, if it's worth doing a 5.5g sump. I haven't looked much into skimmer sizes, but a HOB skimmer does sound like a good...

Need help with sump: 5.5g for 29g..

I'm leaning towards going with a sump for my 29g. The only tank I could fit below it in the stand would be a 5.5g, so that's the only size I could use for a sump. I do have a few questions since I've never done anything like this.. First, I need an overflow. I cannot drill my tank anymore as it...

should I quit the aquarium hobby? ):

I'm with jj...Know that saying "Winners never quit, and quitters never win"? That applies to most everything in life, and especially to this hobby. Perseverance, patience, and the ability to educate yourself are necessary to succeeding. I'd read up on the outbreaks that caused your system to...

    help? is this normal?

LFS's want to sell you the fish, many tell you this to persuade you to buy a fish from them. I would never go back to a LFS that told me to cycle with fish. Cycling with fish is cruel and terrible to the fish. It is putting enormous strain on them and making them sick. They are essentially...

Scratch the 10gal..29gal with 10g sump!

So I've decided I am going to go with an overflow system with a 5.5g sump. Thinking of doing 3 compartments, one for a protein skimmer down the road but to start with mechanical filtration, second with macro, sand, and rock rubble, and third with just a return pump. The return pump would be a...

Scratch the 10gal..29gal with 10g sump!

Sooooo finally got the sand in..30lbs of live sand, and water mixed to 1.025 SG using Red Sea Coral Pro sea salt. I will be letting the water mix a bit more and adding my shrimp in there tomorrow and some LR! Got my 200w Marineland Visi-Therm heater, and a really really small HOB filter on...

Scratch the 10gal..29gal with 10g sump!

Thanks. I have finally decided to go with an Odyssea MH 198w fixture. So it's 1x 150w MH 14,000K and 2x 24w T5HO Actinic. Now I know there's a lot of controversy about this fixture..but. I did my research and decided that it's a great deal for the money. I will admit that I am NOT impressed...

cycling... filter and heater are running now

Now, good sir, you wait. You will have to test your water every few days. First you should see a spike in Ammonia, then gradually the Ammonia will start going down to 0 and you will notice an increase in Nitrites, and then finally your nitrites will go down and you will notice an increase in...

Scratch the 10gal..29gal with 10g sump!

How high above the tank? My biggest thing is being able to grow ANYTHING. Would I be able to hang the MH high enough and maybe have a fan setup over the water to keep it cool? I don't think i'd be able to invest in a chiller just yet. - Vic

Hey all, So I just posted a couple of days ago about starting a 10g reef..well scratch that! Just found a great deal on a 29g tank, so I will be building that instead! And thinking of adding a 10g sump/refuge. I do although have a few NEW questions.. Here is the equipment I currently have: -...
