I'm sure there has to be a place you can buy RO/DI water somewhere near by. Are there any LFS around? Most of them will sell it by the gallon then you don't have to buy a unit right away. You could use distilled water but I have heard that it can contain copper which could be bad.

I don't think you'll see anything right away. I would give it a few days then start testing for ammonia once a day. I keep my in an excel spreadsheet so I can show a graph over time which helps

I would do what roka said, just go with dry sand. It's cheaper and the sand will become 'live' on it's own.

I think most any canister filter you get will already have a pump (less you do it DIY), all you have to do is prime it to get the water moving

That looks great! Be careful with that thermometer tho, they can break and spill lead in to your tank, this happened to me once.

Well I guess one thing is you can't run carbon or anything else in a UGF. Do you have a cabinet for it? If so you could add a small canister filter which would sit under the tank. I use a Eheim ecco 2236 and it's dead quiet. Even your HOB should be pretty quiet if you keep your water level high
