    Newbie :)

do a search on fishless cycling. you can get your tank ready for fish without the risk of killing them. all you need is a fishtank, ammonia and filter. after two weeks, you tank will be ready for fish. if you get enough filter media from your buddy it may be ready ina few days

    Newbie :)

i agree with everything that fort says. except that maybe if your ammonia or nitrite levels are too high, i might consider doing two 50% water changes today and then continue doing 50% water changes per day untill your issue is resolved. you definately got some bad advice from the local...

    Hair algae HELP!

spot treating with h202 will do the trick. turn off all of your filtration and water flow. then dose h202 very slowly with a syringe over the algae. the next day you should see it turn red (it does that when it dies) but you need to get to the root of the problem like neilanh said and not...

thats exactly how i package my flat rate boxes. but there is a potential for them to be in the mail for 5 days and i think thats too long in the mail. 2-3 days is kinda long too but theres rarely a problem. some people wont even ship unless you pay for express

2 of my shrimp tanks are low light and i use the hood that it came with but i use the spiral energy saver lights that you would use in a normal light fixture for your house, i think their called cfl. i have low light plants like moss, java ferns, crypts growing in them another shrimp tank...

plants do like light. but you cant have bright lights and no co2, it doesnt work like that. so keep it low. i dont get involved in the light debates. everyone has their own preference about what kind and how much light to go with. so you're gonna have to research that on your own, sorry...

dont go crazy over substrates with nutrients, most plants get everything they need from the water column. as far as white substrate i wouldnt recommend it. its difficult to keep it looking clean and often turns green with algae. as far as co2, just keep the lights low and you can make it...

what i use is the normal flourite. but there is black flourite sand too click up top where it says "planted substrates" Seachem Gravel your filter is just fine. with any kind of filter its a good idea to put a pre-filter over the intake of the filter to prevent any shrimp, especially...
