To mix or not to mix? Aquasoil and SMS

A few of the moderators in our local group are trying Eco/ADA mix. ADA has one big thing going for it - it grows plants extremely well - and LOTS of little things against it - it hard to keep some plants rooted in it - it is easy to crush into powder when moving things around - water clouds...

    Can't Get Rid of BBA

I have noticed a higher incidence of BBA when I turn my CO2 off at night. Turning it down and running 24/7 seems to work better for me. As Travis pointed out, flow is also very important, though I have had it growing right on the holes in my spraybar before :( As Joy said - you need to...

    Tank gone wild... Kind of...

That is actually Hydrocotyle verticillata. When I got it I thought it would be a rather small plant but it has proven the opposite. I see heads pop-up in different places throughout the tank on a regular basis. When I added it, it was all of the left side, kinda in the shady area. Thanks...

    Tank gone wild... Kind of...

:) I picked up that ADA tank in the other thread (link in my first post about my SW setup) from a LFS for about $100. I really like those tanks now and will be replacing this 72 bowfront with a 120-P ADA tank (65ish gallons) in the not too distant future. Thus some of the neglect.

    Tank gone wild... Kind of...

Thanks :) ... Downio has been on my list for a while and I couldn't resist getting some when I ran into it. Even though it had to be planted on top of the clover... Kinda like when I added some Crinum C. and it quickly ended up buried in moss and blyxa :( I don't ever clean the gravel, just...

    Tank gone wild... Kind of...

It has been a while since I posted here, thought it might be worth an update... I have been serious neglecting my 72 gallon for the past several months, except for a couple bouts of collectoritis where I needed to find more room to add plants... I have mostly been working on my new SW nano -...

algae on back glass = algae on plants?

FWIW - I never scrub the back glass in my 72-gallon and don't have any problems. As others have mentioned here, algae is ever present in your aquarium - the goal is just to keep it in check. I have a black back on my tank and you really can't tell, but I am sure that there is at least a years...

    moss balls and otto

Nope - you won't have any issues.

    Done with medium light already.

Thanks Randy. Suspicions confirmed. The farther I get into this hobby, the more I am drawn to rare and difficult plants (and fish). High light works for everything and I don't see a good reason to change that. IME, it being difficult to "balancing a high light tank" is a myth. Current...

    Happy Ending

Awesome! I have mixed feelings about Riccia. Very cool plant, but definitely high/medium maintenance. It's kinda like playdoh though - you can do almost anything with it. You tank looks beautiful. I really like the simplicity thing you have going there. Can't see where you might plan on...

    Fuzz Algae? Not Hair Algae!

Forgot to mention if you do consider dosing excel, there are a few plants that would not take it well. Most notably are Val and Anacharis. HM and HC have also melted on me with Excel, though they seem more tolerant. I participated on a rant on another board about SAEs (not everyone agrees...

    Fuzz Algae? Not Hair Algae!

You really need to determine how you got it in the first place and remove as much as you can manually. It would also be good to verify what you have across multiple websites: http://www.theplantedtank.co.uk/algae.htm http://www.aquariumalgae.blogspot.com/ If you keep mosses or other...

Carbo Plus CO2 and a Controller Question

The solenoid turns his CO2 off at night - plugged into a timer. Otherwise you are right a pH controller would also make good use of the solenoid. Many folks out there do not use controllers and are able to balance their CO2 injection with BPS (Bubble Per Second) tweaking with a needle valve...

    Is This Cheap?

Not bad. You can typically get this for under $80 though. Here is where I have bought mine: http://www.aquacave.com/detail.aspx?ID=4

    Plant ID

This is one of my favorite plants. You should attach it to wood or rocks.

    Plant ID

My guess would be an emersed growth of Bolbitis heudelotii: http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/plantfinder/details.php?id=260&category=genus&spec=Bolbitis

    Substrate question

You will be happy with Eco. It is money well spent. Buy it on DrsFosterSmith.com and use the code DODGE at check out for another 15% off (hope this discount still works!).

    Substrate question

Rumor is that this is repackaged Lesco Soil Master Select or SMS for short. It is a clay-based substrate that will work well. I don't think it is quite as nice as ADA AquaSoil or Eco Complete, but probably as good as something like Flourite.

    My plants keep dying!!!

Your purple waffle is not a true aquatic plant and will slowly rot and die: http://www.plantgeek.net/plant-167.htm Many Fish stores sell plants for aquarium use that are not aquatic - shocking as that may sound. Also - any aquarium will benefit enormously from CO2 injection, regardless of...

    newly pressurized and ph swings

When you start a new tank of CO2 - often times it does this trailing off pressure thing, where you set the pressure right, but over the first day or so it slows to a crawl or stops. Best way to avoid it IME is to set your low pressure side up to about 30psi if your regulator lets you control...

How to make a reference KH solution for CO2 measurement

I have also heard that some non-glass drop checkers can leak tank water into the test solution. The one-piece glass ones will definitely not do this to you.
