    Possible Ich problem

I have much the same question, only with a pygmy cherub angel (centropyge argi). Introduced him to the tank only yesterday, but woke up today to find a dozen or so small white specks that look like it could be ich. He didn't have any yesterday. He is, however, behaving normally, he's...

Giant Clams - Downside to them?

They require a lot of light, don't they? I'd love to get one but I'm pretty sure I'd have to upgrade my lighting first.

    Necessary-ness of changing water...

If there is one single piece of aquarium advice that is universal no matter what type of tank you have or who you are asking, it is to change your water frequently and consistently.

Fish adding schedule- add now, or wait? (LOTS of questions!)

Thanks for your replies. I did add a whole bunch of crushed pellet food at the start and several days later levels were zero. I've also had the goby in there for several days now and everything still tests ok. Ahab, thanks. I've got a really nice macro lens, and the goby is the first fish...

getting your cuc into the tank

Hermits, I just picked up by the shells. Its what the lfs guy did. Call me sadistic, but I thought it was great fun watching them right themselves after I dropped them in the tank. I felt better after I saw a few fall off my rock and have to right themselves without my interference.

Fish adding schedule- add now, or wait? (LOTS of questions!)

The new tank (biocube 29) has been up and running for about a week and a half now. The live rock must have been fully cured because even after a week of testing every day, ammonia and nitrite were still undetectable. Nitrate has stayed constant at 20ppm, but I did originally use tap water...

    New to Saltwater (and AA)

^ Solid advice. You will be told by pretty much everyone to take the fish back and get at least a few pieces of live rock. If you get good cured rock it can speed up the cycle a lot.

    otocinclus catfish

They'll be fine. Won't eat your fish, they eat algae. In my tank, they completely ignore the other fish and vice versa. You also don't have to worry about your plants, in fact, they can help by rasping algae off the leaves.

    New Oto went pale!

The same thing happened to both my otos when I moved my tank recently. They were only in the bucket a bit over an hour, and although I put in a heater when I got to the new place, they may have gotten a bit chilly. It didn't help that I had a very difficult time netting them out of the bucket...

Bettas keep dying! This one has both fin rot and velvet!

Yes, I am aware of all of that. Still, no ammonia is better than some, even if they can tolerate it. Neither of my tanks have detectable levels. I'm really, really not trying to attack anyone or tell anyone the best way to keep bettas, just saying that I personally think keeping them in...

    Kribbies!!

Hmm. If I could find a decent home for my gourami and danios, I might consider giving them away and picking up a female.

    New Black lionfish!

I saw one of these a few weeks ago, made me wish I had a large enough tank. One day. They are really beautiful fish.

    Kribbies!!

Very nice! I've got a single small krib in my ten gallon, and I'd really like to buy a female and try and get them to spawn. I know the ten isn't really large enough though. How big is your tank?

Bettas keep dying! This one has both fin rot and velvet!

*shrug* I understand that bettas are tough fish and that people do keep them in suboptimal conditions successfully but I still feel that heating and filtration should be used if at all possible. I'm really not trying to come off as some sort of "omg you are torturing your fish" person, just...

Bettas keep dying! This one has both fin rot and velvet!

You aren't very specific about tank conditions other than the fact that they are 1.5 gallon tanks. Bettas can be kept in spaces this small but you have to be very diligent about water changes and careful about temperature fluctuations. Are the tanks heated? What sort of filtration do you have...

    Please be kind...

I've never understood how emotional some people get over hybrids. Personally I think flowerhorns can be very attractive.

    otocinclus with yellow shrimp?

With my otos, its like they don't exist as far as everything else in the tank is concerned.

    Inch Per Gallon

I think it is an ok albeit very general rule of thumb as long as you're talking about small tetras and barbs and such. Anything larger and it goes right out the window.

    Starter aquarium

I agree with your sentiment, but... I've been keeping one happy, healthy betta in a five gallon and a second in a three for several months now. The unfortunate truth is that people view fish as far more disposable than most other pets, and the relatively high "background" mortality in the...

    How important is Ph?

When I bought my very first fish, the guy at the store was very insistent that my pH absolutely needed to be 7. He went and grabbed a (very large) thing of pH powder, "proper pH" I believe the brand name was. I'm convinced that my constant fiddling with it was a major factor in the deaths of...

Come on live rock, do something!!! (impatience is NOT a virtue)

So far ammonia (as well as everything else) has tested zero and the rock, which I picked by hand out of the lfs's tank, did not smell, which I've read is a sign of properly cured rock. There's some stringy stuff attached, and it looks dead (to my newbie eyes) and I'm not sure if I should get a...

Come on live rock, do something!!! (impatience is NOT a virtue)

So, I finally got my first saltwater tank (woo!!!) and am waiting for it to cycle. Biocube 29 with sand and about 30lb or so of live rock. Now, I picked pieces with lots of little pink and purple spots and one even has a whole side encrusted with green, but so far I've not seen any...

    Aquarium safe bucket

Bought a plastic bucket from home depot to use with my new saltwater tank, and I'm sure I'm just being overly anxious, but is there anything I need to wash it with other than just a plain old rinse to make it safe to use?

    betta has fin rot

What about a three gallon? If you absolutely have to keep it in the one gal, heat it (if you aren't already) and up the water changes even more, 50% or more a day perhaps. But you (and the betta) will really be much better off in a larger tank. Three or five gallons might not seem like much...

    3 Gallon Eclipse

As for stocking it, I've got one with a single betta and it works well as long as you don't skimp on the water changes.
