    Plastic Plants with SW

Agreed... absolute algae garden. It isn't worth the pain of trying to clean all the algae off all of the time (unless you're the type of person who enjoys scrubbing algae off of things). I tried this at first, but gave up and threw them all away after about 6 months.

Should I be feeding him more than once a day?

    feeding engineer goby

When he was little I fed him flake, but now that he's bigger (6 inches), I feel like he needs a little more variety or something bigger. I'd be interested to know what others are feeding them. Also, I recently had to move his tank (40 gal FOWLR) and I haven't hardly seen him eat since (about a...

Would it be unusual, then, to have hundreds of microscopic bristleworms crawling around in the sand then?

    microscopic goodies (pic)

I've been messing around with the microscopes and MOTIC-cams in my classroom and caught a nice shot of one of the little critters roaming around in my substrate. I've been trying to find it's classification, but no luck so far. Does anyone have any knowlege on this organism? It's the little...

looking for a good protist reference

I'd like to have my class look at and try to identify some of the critters thriving in the substrate of our class tank. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any internet resources to use. Does anyone know of any? The organism that seems to be the most abundant is a red, semitransparent...

Do they have a future together?

Doesn't it depend on which is the mother and which is the father? I thought I heard that somwhere, but I could be completely mistaken.

    one "arm" after molting

So the general consesus is that this is not my fault? I think that's what I'm getting. Just making sure that this isn't the syptom of some deficiency of something.

    one "arm" after molting

Well that's unfortunate, he always looked so tough.

    one "arm" after molting

Well that's hopeful. I look for that on Harold. What's weird to me is that he seems to have lost it during the molt. Generally this is when appendages are grown. I'm concerned that maybe he is not healthy. The possibility exists that he lost it after he had already molted, but then I think...

will it grow back on the next molt?

    one "arm" after molting

My Coral Banded Shrimp (Harold) molted last night. Now, one time he lost one of his little legs (for walking) during the normal course of living, but it grew back after he molted. This time, he was fully intact (as far as I know) but after the molting he has lost one of his really big pincher...

Clown swims vertical and treads water?

I got a "Patrick Star Bubble House" for christmas one year and put it in the tank (looks like half of a coconut with a weathervane on top). It was a hair algae magnet and was tough to clean. When the algae got thicker, my clown would hide in there, swimming amongst the waving strands of algae...

It looks like a miniature one of those thermal vent worms. Got any Hydrogen sulfide in your tank? (j/k)

    Coral Banded Shrimp

I know that CBS's can be very hostile to other invertibrates (heck, mines hostile to my fish. good thing he can't swim) but for me atleast, they're cool enough that I'd rather have one CB than a million other kinds of shrimp. But yeah, he'll bug the heck out of anyone he can.

What would you do with this 50,000 gal monster home tank??

He could charge admission to help offset the cost. I know I'd pay to see it.

Test tube caps, do they burn you up also?

It's not necessary of frantically "shake" the test tube. Just turn it over slowly, and then turn it over again. Doing that a couple times is enough. The liquid can't "fly" out then (although if your cap doesn't fit tight enough, you may get a drop or two dripping down the side). If it still...

    bottled water

There is very little regulation on how "pure" bottled water has to be. Esssentially, I can bottle the water coming out of my garden hose and sell it. There is research out there comparing the impurities in various brands of bottled water. High school science classes sometimes do this as a...
