    Beer Can as Decor?

I don't know about you, but my aquarium's certainly not chilled to 'ice-cold'...

Wow. Okay the girlfriend wants a seahorse tank so I'll be making one of these setups too soon! I'm really impressed!

    riccia

I think riccia looks better, but duckweed copes with higher flow rates better, and it's one of the easiest ways I've found to sequester nitrate :-)

New Tank In Progress Feedback Appreciated [Pics]

Oh and the red lights aren't that bright I just used a lengthy exposure. You have to sit there until your eyes adjust properly. So far the nocturnals (a whiptail, baby BGK, and some khulis) don't seem to mind at all and go about their business. So I can finally see them :-)

New Tank In Progress Feedback Appreciated [Pics]

Ok time for a pics update. I've now rescued about 20 guppies so there's gonna be a ton of babies soon. The baby danios are doing fine, and I believe one of my cherry shrimp is carrying eggs! Also put in those lights I ordered on ebay: Any thoughts?

    riccia

Mine gets all stuck in my lovely crested java ferns. Gaaah! They're so beautiful but they collect so much debris! I want Discus but they're a pain in the butt (the ferns that is). I'm slowly switching from riccia to duckweed. It will never ever ever root to anything.

    Happy Birthday! :-)

    Help!

The best advice I can give you is to not even look at the ph up and ph down in the shop. Almost all fish will live happily in water that you could drink. If it burns you it will hurt the fish, but apart from that you shouldn't have any problems. The main problems occur when trying to breed fish...

Is it me or is my tank slowly leaking?

I used to work in the glass + window business as a trades assistant. This sounds almost exactly like half of what my job was :-)

I was going to get an eheim but the deal on the fluval was too good. Comes to approx US$75.

New Tank In Progress Feedback Appreciated [Pics]

Ok here's the second part of tonight's update. I have installed a 2nd hand filter, a fluval 405 ($110AU), increased the lighting to 3wpg, and added a co2 injection system. Pics below.

Question: I put a couple of these plants in not too long ago and 2 of them (the 2 under the most light) have started growing red bits, with bright-coloured parts at the center of each red arrangement. What is it? Looks like this: Apologies for poor quality photography.

    From a fish'n'ships shop!

    Experience with tank dividers?

I don't have a puffer ... yet :-) I'm now considering splitting a tank since my cherry shrimps get eaten every now and then.

Is this a good idea? (filtration)

I think if I had the hardware I would try and get it down pat, and if it's working for you then it's working for you and there's no need to change. If the steriliser isn't impeding the flow very much and is rated for the flow rate then it could be likened to having a slightly longer hose between...

Is this a good idea? (filtration)

You may not run them dry if you have such awesome seals and suction, but if you get a blockage in the line you could damage a pump, or shorten it's lifetime, or if the block were in the second then the top of the first cannister may bust open, esp as the seal degrades over time. It may work on...

    Newbie needs big time help!

As for the hardness you can dilute the dissolved minerals in the water using more pure water (ask fish shop or battery shop). The dilution is fairly straightforward eg 50% pure water gives 1/2 the hardness basically. Try this web page from the krib. Just be careful if using water from a reverse...

    Experience with tank dividers?

Looking good. Now you've got me considering doing the same thing...

    Activated carbon can do harm?

:-) And crystal clear water I presume.

Where do you throw your dirty water?

We've dumped the water just in a specific spot for about 3 weeks now, and it's come up with a ton of weeds exactly there! So there must be something in there that the plants like.

    Activated carbon can do harm?

I've no great experience with carbon cartridges, but I will point out that there's a difference between happy healthy fish and not losing fish. I'm not saying you're a bad aquarist at all :-) Just pointing out that there are shades of grey (pun intended). Would a carbon filter affect different...
