getting oil out of 5 gallon containers?

I dunno if soap is a great idea if it will be holding tank water, but i use powder laundry soap to remove all the oil that spills on the floor from a car oil change. it works great it removing all traces of oil. I'm pretty sure the laundry soap could be washed out with enough water. Just...

    Sexing Kaudern's Cardinalfish

I understood it was a behavioral trait rather than a physical trait. It was something about the way each fish interact with the other fish. I could be mistaken, but I think it was the dominant female that would bully the other fishes, and the fish she didnt attack were possible male mates.

How does this list look for a 75 gallon tank?

As far as I understood, when they grow larger, they tend to try and eat things in your tank (snails, fish, etc)

Getting conflicting advice, need some clarity re: filtration

Welcome to AA!! I'm by no means an expert at saltwater tanks, but have gained quite a bit of knowledge from the experts on here. From what I've understood, with smaller tanks, you don't necessarily need a skimmer. Weekly water changes will be enough to remove excess nutrients in the tank...

    Baby Nerite?

I just recently found a new snail crawling on top of my mag float. Its red and white and has a similar pattern to a caribbean nerite. I currently have nerites, ceriths, astraes, nassarius, and ilyanassa snails in the tank. Any ideas what kind of snail it is, and if it is safe to leave in the...

    Fake Nassarius??

Will do, the article talks about the snails possibly carrying 9 different species of flukes, which it says normally doesnt attack humans but may mistakenly burrow under your skin. Is there any serious harm in leaving them in?

    Fake Nassarius??

I recently found out that I had purchased some fake nassarius snails, Ilyanassa obsoleta, from an ebay vender ( I didn't even know they were really that different besides the color. I found an article here talking about the damage that can be done in a tank from having these snails: Do You...

Anybody know of any sites that has them for sale? I've been looking for a while now with no luck, and the LFS around here don't sell them. My girlfriend saw some while I was browsing the web, and really wants me to help her find some. Thanks to whoever can help.

What does it take to convert my 55g freshwater to saltwater?

If your tank is empty right now, you can add the water and salt directly into your tank. Add a heater and powerhead to allow the salt to mix in. You will also need the refractometer to be able to measure if you have added the correct amount of salt. I picked one up at drsF&S, something like...

What does it take to convert my 55g freshwater to saltwater?

I've read that the sponges in the canister filters trap left over food and detritus, which are eventually converted into nitrates. Some people have had success with the canister filters, but say that they had to keep up with cleaning the sponges and water changes. Another option is to remove...

What does it take to convert my 55g freshwater to saltwater?

I just converted my 55gallon FW to a SW. I had to buy a new light, a few more powerheads, live rock, replaced all sand, salt, a refractometer, saltwater test kit, and a skimmer. There is a good article here on the site that explains the pros and cons of a protein skimmer. It is used to remove...

    Some macro algae IDs please

I was just curious if any of these things are desirable in the home aquarium, or should I start removing all of them asap. I use ro/di water, and rinse all frozen foods (feed 1/4 cube every other day), nitrates at 5ppm, not sure what else may be causing this algae. I only have about 15 snails...

RO/DI top off bad for fish?

I have a 55gallon sumpless tank, with a pair of clownfish who are the most curious little creatures I have ever seen. Anytime something is in the tank, hand, bubbles, anything they immediately swim over to it and check it out. Is it bad for them to be swimming through new ro/di water that is...
