    10 Gal Coral Only Build

This is a pretty long thread, sorry if it was discussed already. But, you could pretty easily cycle with just base rock. That stuff causes pretty high ammonia spikes once it's underwater again.

    Poor water circulation?

oh yeah, forgot about Diatoms. Tank is a little under 2 years old.

    Poor water circulation?

90g FOWLER lightly stocked at the moment. I have some rusty, cyano looking stuff on the sand. I have 2 270gph powersweep (which I'm not overly impressed with) PH's sitting at the top of the tank on both sides, aiming down as best I can. Flow looks okay towards the bottom but am wondering if a...

Do I really need a skimmer?

I do get a pretty good return of nasty foam in the collection chamber every 3 days or so. But okay, I'll trim back the feeding a bit and monitor parameters for awhile.

Do I really need a skimmer?

I have a 90g FOWLER pretty lightly stocked (2 Chromis, Yellow Tang, Clown, Wrasse, and the some CUC) I do weekly 30% WCs. Do I need to run a skimmer? It's loud and causes salt build up on top of the tank. Could I just run it a couple days a week?

    Double strip lighting?

I currently have a single strip fixture for my 90g fowler with a coralife 50/50 bulb. The fixture is aging and I'll probably replace it soon. Would a double strip better? If so, what combination of bulbs would work best. Again, it's a fowler system so no corals.

    20g reef set up

Oh boy. Okay, any templates out there to look at?

    20g reef set up

I'm exactly sure what would be most appropriate. But, being a smaller volume tank, and a reef system, I'm thinking of some kind of sump or something to expand the water volume as much as possible.

    20g reef set up

I currently maintain a 90g FOWLER at work that is getting along fine. I'm considering a reef system for my home. I'd like to go with a 20g long. I'm not looking to develop the system of the year or anything, just some nano corals and a couple fish. Any suggestions on filtration? Should I drill...

    Mixing salt water

Do you have a PH or some other pump in the trash can? Are you circulating the water?

    Finicky Raccoon Butterfly

I didn't see him eat at the store, was advised that he was a slightly better eater then most. I'll contact the store and see what they were giving him.

    Finicky Raccoon Butterfly

Added this fish to QT last thursday. Doesn't appear to be real intersted in eating. All I can get him to do is nip at some green algea on a clip. I marinate it in vita-chem and garlic to get what nutrients I can into him. Any suggestions for real food. I've tried flake, pellets, mysis, and...

    Sump options

I have a 90g fowler with a HOB skimmer. The tank is in a classroom and I'd like to install a sump to help quiet the noise and also increase water volume. The tank has been up about a year now and I have absolutly no idea how to accomplish this. All I know is that the tank is not drilled and...

    Cycle or Cure base rock

I'm just gonna let the cycle go. It will be placed in the DT to build up the existing LR so I'm not too concerned if there is anything alive on it right away. I'm more concerned with not causing a spike in the DT.

    Raccoon Butterfly compatibility

I like the look of them and one is available but charts state they are fish only and could eat inverts. Live aqauria states- Would this include crabs, cleaner shrimp, and CUC's?

    Cycle or Cure base rock

I assume/ attribute the ammonia spike to dead matter left on the rock (even after srubbing) decaying. Probably not a bad idea, just see if something happens.

    Cycle or Cure base rock

K, so I should do water changes then? I understand the point of water changes in curing LR is to avoid killing off established bacteria from high Amm. levels. This rock started off completely void of anything alive so... is there still a risk from the high Amm. on the developing bacteria or...

    Cycle or Cure base rock

Yeah, it's going into an established DT tank once it's...well, either cycled or cured.

    Cycle or Cure base rock

I ordered 15lbs of that Eco-Rock. Basically just dead, dried out LR. I rinsed it and scrubbed thoroughly with tap water and placed it in a 10g container with DT water from a PWC, a PH, and heater. Now, Do I treat this like curing and do PWCs or let the nitro. cycle do it's thing uninterrupted? I...

    Six Line Wrasse w/ popeye

It appears to only be affecting one eye and the fish seems unaffected, swimming and eating good. Should I move it to QT or try to feed medicated food in the display? Anybody know of a good medication to treat this?

Tank Journal - 225 SW FOWLR, Possible future reef

    Curing LR

Can I use old, display tank water from PWCs to cure some LR. It's no big deal to mix fresh but would save me some time and salt.

Is rinsing live sand a good idea before putting it in my tank?

If it was dry it's most likely not "live" anymore. It's probably just plain old sand by now so I would save the saltwater and give it a good rinse with tap. The more you rinse the faster your water will clear. Don't worry, it will be cloudy for a few days regardless. Your sand will slowly...
