possible dwarf gourami disease / iridovirus - any suggestions beyond euthanasia?

Agreed, but thank you for your suggestions, better to try something than just watch them waste away.

possible dwarf gourami disease / iridovirus - any suggestions beyond euthanasia?

UPDATE: I added the second dose of Maracyn Plus on Tuesday, and when I got home from work yesterday I found that patient X was dead. A few hours later I noticed another one of the gourami laying on his side gasping, so I euthanized him. I did a 50% water change and the third gourami appears to...

possible dwarf gourami disease / iridovirus - any suggestions beyond euthanasia?

Thanks for the clarification and the suggestion. I'll give the Maracyn a shot and report back.

possible dwarf gourami disease / iridovirus - any suggestions beyond euthanasia?

I'll take an alternative diagnoses with more hope! I thankfully don't have any personal experience with neon tetra disease but the descriptions don't seem to match what I'm seeing. Aside from the open sores / ulcers, they look fine, I don't see any changes to muscles or bone, but that seems to...

possible dwarf gourami disease / iridovirus - any suggestions beyond euthanasia?

Here's an updated picture of the little guy who's been in QT for about 2 weeks. It's not a very good picture but I just noticed that the largest sore which is on his side has two little white fleshy pieces hanging out. They're about the same size as his scales but float pretty loosely, and...

possible dwarf gourami disease / iridovirus - any suggestions beyond euthanasia?

Actually they all seem fairly indifferent to each other so I don't think that's the issue, plus they got along fine for 3 weeks in a 10gal QT so I'm sure there would be even less issue in a 55gal.

possible dwarf gourami disease / iridovirus - any suggestions beyond euthanasia?

My understanding has been that there really weren't any ways to treat viruses or viral infections in fish, which is why I've been focusing on trying to keep the water as clean as possible. Of course, that's assuming this is a virus and not something else. I have been adding Kordon Fish...

possible dwarf gourami disease / iridovirus - any suggestions beyond euthanasia?

A few weeks ago, I came back from being out of town for a week and noticed that one of my powder blue DG's had some raised scales and a small sore on his side. Upped the water change, and kept an eye on the tank parameters, but the sore spread and noticed that his ventral fins looked bad also...

    Can I get a turtle

75 gallons would only be enough for 1 slider - they get pretty big. Plus with a turtle you'd need to worry about having a safe place for it to crawl out and bask. Yes, they will escape, and if there is any way through or under the fence they will find it. . .not exactly smart but they are...

Chronic internal parasites & I'm at my wit's end - suggestions?

Thanks for asking, though I'm not entirely sure how to answer. So far I've treated the whole tank with 5 doses of the metronidazole and continued with the Epsom salts. Each dosage followed at least a 25% water change. Phantom has been acting a bit more like his normal self, actually eating...

Chronic internal parasites & I'm at my wit's end - suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestion, I appreciate knowing what's worked well for others! Just started treatment with the metronidazole last night so I'll likely continue alternating with that and water changes for a few days, hopefully this will do the trick. Otherwise, another big water change and then...

Chronic internal parasites & I'm at my wit's end - suggestions?

Agreed, normally Parasite Guard is my go-to, guaranteed fix but every now and then it doesn't seem to do much good. Not sure if it's due to different strains or the parasites somehow adapt to it. Did a 60% water change last night, then dosed with Epsom salts and metronidazole so we'll see how...

Chronic internal parasites & I'm at my wit's end - suggestions?

Thanks, I'll definitely keep that stuff in mind! I'm going that the concentrated Zole will do the trick but agree is likely time to go a new route.

Thanks for the suggestion but he hasn't eaten for several weeks.

Chronic internal parasites & I'm at my wit's end - suggestions?

Nothing "productive", just more of the stringy white stuff, though it's also been several weeks since he last ate. So far every one seems to be handling the addition of the Epsom salts well, hopefully the Zole gets here soon. If that doesn't work I don't know what else to try.

Chronic internal parasites & I'm at my wit's end - suggestions?

Epsom salt bath update: I put my sick angel fish in a 5-gal bucket with 2 Tbsp of epsom salt and 2 gallons of water from his tank with plans of keeping him in there for 20 minutes. About 10-12 minutes in, he started swimming furiously into the sides of the bucket so I put him back in the main...

Chronic internal parasites & I'm at my wit's end - suggestions?

Sorry, I'd meant that the bath would just be epsom salts, but for the main tank I'd try both. About to go dig up the salts now, I'll report back on whether the bath seems to help. Thanks

Chronic internal parasites & I'm at my wit's end - suggestions?

Thank you for the suggestion, think I will definitely try this, both as a bath for the angel and adding a bit to the whole tank. Do you know of any reason not to combine this with the metronidazole? A quick search online looks like it should be safe but wanted another opinion. :thanks:

Chronic internal parasites & I'm at my wit's end - suggestions?

Good luck! Going through this a few times a year, I'd almost started thinking about getting rid of the tank altogether :banghead:. Since my problem just seems to be cichilids, (and like you, mostly with the angels) now I'm leaning towards making it a collection of different schooling fish, and...

Chronic internal parasites & I'm at my wit's end - suggestions?

I ordered some metronidazole but until then, thank you for the reminder about epsom salts - I'd totally forgotten that's why I had it! For dosage, do you think 1 Tbsp / 5 gallons would be ok?

Any similar issues with rams, either Bolivian or German Blues? Also, do you think the Fish Zole would help?

Chronic internal parasites & I'm at my wit's end - suggestions?

Do you have any idea why it seems like cichlids are more prone to this than other species? I have some cory cats and black skirt tetras that have been with me for 5+ years but I'm lucky if I can keep angelfish around for more than 2. Some days it's hard to not feel like a bad fish-keeper. . .

Chronic internal parasites & I'm at my wit's end - suggestions?

The Parasite Guard is usually my go-to treatment when this happens, but I don't know if they've become resistant to it or may PG only treats some types of internal parasites. Haven't seen any poo in well over a week, and before that it was the standard stringy white feces that goes along with...

Chronic internal parasites & I'm at my wit's end - suggestions?

All of the new fish have been purchased at nearby chain pet stores, either PetSmart or Jack's. The only LFS that I know of has a rather lousy reputation, sick fish, and ridiculous prices.

Chronic internal parasites & I'm at my wit's end - suggestions?

Over the last few years, any time I add new fish to my tank it seems like I also end up treating for internal parasites, and ultimately loosing a few of my cichlids (angel fish and rams). This happens even after keeping the new fish in QT for several weeks until everybody looks healthy and has...
