    My fish room for Malawis

I'm curious. You may have posted this earlier and I missed it, but did you have any electrical work done to prepare for the extra power draw of all those heaters and lights? I assume you must have 150-200W heaters in each of those tanks...

New World Cichlid Stocking (55 Gallon)

+1 to CA_BroncoFan on stocking tips! Regarding the plants, I have an African tank that was heavily planted with annubias, java moss and java fern for several months. Nobody touched the plants at all. Then all of a sudden it was like they realized that there was a big salad buffet and...

African cichlids - swimming nose up

thanks Jonathan! I ended up doing a 60% PWC, rinsing the filter media and moving the output to along the waterline. Everything seems to be back to normal now. Cheers, Jef

African cichlids - swimming nose up

That's an interesting point. I wonder if I should redirect the filter output closer to the top of the tank so that it agitates the surface more? It's one of the outputs that's about a 15" long tube with holes every inch or so. Right now it's directed through the center of the tank.

African cichlids - swimming nose up

Hey all, I have a 90G cichlid tank that has been very healthy but i'm experiencing some weird behavior in the last 12 hours. Almost everyone in the tank is swimming at the top "nose up". Whenever I walk by, they swim back to their respective hiding places but within a few minutes, they're all...

    African Aquascaping?

Wow, thats a REALLY nice looking tank. I have envy. I've gone with a similar setup, but driftwood instead of rocks.

    Osaka 260 Aquarium- Cichlid Stocking

Angel fish stock I have a 30G tank with 4 Angelfish, 2 clown loaches, 3 bala sharks and 3 red fin sharks. They all get along great. It's a fairly new tank (4 months or so) so I know that in the next few months I'll expect to upgrade it to something significantly bigger. Oh, I also keep ghost...

    Rams and Shrimp???

Fluval Edge I have one of these tanks, and I don't find it that bad to clean. No worse really than any of my other tanks. The biggest problem that I have with it (other than how bloody expensive all of the accessories are for it) is that the opening at the top is so small that I can't put my...

Oh wow! Congrats, hopefully they each have 10 fingers and toes...wait...nevermind. Now that I have the picture you posted of the mom holding, I'm checking mine out every day!

    Cichlid fry - YAY/Help!

Interesting. I have a 90G so not a lot of room underneath for a breader tank that size. We decided to go with a smaller 16G bow front tank. Having moved all the babies over, they're doing really well. One stupid/scarey moment though. When I set up the new tank (moved filter media and water...

    Loach advice

Kuhli loaches? Please don't take this as a definitive answer, but what about a couple of Kuhli loaches? Any thoughts from experienced keepers? If you can keep them from hiding all the time, they're fun to keep... J

    Cichlid fry - YAY/Help!

Really? Only an inch? They're pretty close to that already (they've probably been around for a while and I just missed them), I'd say 3/4 inch or so.

    Cichlid fry - YAY/Help!

Hey all, This weekend I discovered 3 fry in my cichlid tank. Once I realized that they were there, I moved them over to a small (2.5 G) tank right away. I suspect that they are Melanochromis (based upon what I suspect is the mom staying hidden with them). I'm looking for a couple of...

    Camera Choices

I can't speak to Sony camera anymore, I switched over to Canon a few years ago and have been very, very happy. Sony was great as well. I have the Canon 450D (Rebel XSI) and have been very happy with it. It takes great shots, but you will want to invest in a good tripod especially with...

    starting over - stocking/compatibility questions

Sorry, I re-read my post and just to clarify, I'll be restocking a 30 gallon freshwater tank that has already been cycled and has a few pre-existing inhabitants.

    starting over - stocking/compatibility questions

Hello, well after the massacre (Ich) I experienced in the last few days I'm now thinking about restocking my 30G freshwater tank. I'll be waiting a few weeks (continuing with higher temps, salt, etc...) to ensure that the Ich is all gone and will be getting a QT tank, but I want to start...

    So...I've learned my lesson.

Great idea Thanks Joy! That's a GREAT idea, I'll do that for sure. Since it's a 10G tank, I assume then that the process would look something like this: 1. Leave QT tank clean and dry until needed. Give it a rinse with tap water. 2. take about 10G of water from the target tank 3. put it in...

    So...I've learned my lesson.

Well, the 4 guppies have died (I forgot to mention them in the first post), the rest of the tetras and 2 more cherry barbs. The cichlid tank still seems fine. I'm going to go get a QT tank this weekend before planning out restocking. I'm curious about running a small 10G quarantine tank...

    So...I've learned my lesson.

I never really understood the requirement for a quarantine tank. NOW I understand the need. I picked up 6 cherry barbs about 10 days ago. On Thursday night my girlfriend noticed some white spots. I got the heat turned up (slowly got it to 84), I added the required salt (2 tsp/gallon) , I...
