Really? I would leave it in hopes that it would somehow survive to adulthood. Then you could see what kind of critter it is.

I bet its fine. Hot water would kill any bacteria, but fungus is more likely to be growing on wet wood in the dark. If it doesn't look like it has excessive fungal growth I would still use it.

It looks awfully large to be pond snail eggs. Those "eggs" are at least 4x the diameter of the plant's leaf stems. What tank is it in? What fish are in there? Are any of them new? Is the plant new?

Pond snails are an eye-sore. Mine never ate my plants, but if you leave them uncontrolled they will multiply at a ridiculous pace. I have a friend whose tank floor is literally covered with their shells, you cannot see the substrate at all. Before I took care of mine I had problems with them...

Where do you get your plants? Seems like your vendor may be growing them outdoors. We did some invert identification in my ecology class and it does look kinda like a dragonfly larvae, or at least the juvenile stage of some type of fly.
