    Eunicid Worm

4, 8, and 12-line wrasses do the same thing too. They basically settle into the rock and wrap themselves in mucous. http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-08/hcs3/index.php

    Eunicid Worm

If it has 5 tentacles, I would probably capture it and throw it in the sump. When 6-lines sleep they make a mucous cocoon which makes them sitting ducks for a larger Eunicid.

    Eunicid Worm

I wouldn't count on it. The question is, in 6 months, will it have an interest in your six-line?

    Eunicid Worm

If it's lightning fast, it is probably a Eunicid. The first time I saw one move, I freaked. Does it have five tentacles on it's head?

Why am I loosing my crustacians?

Every year during tax season, I don't do a water change for 4 months as I don't have time. I've never lost any inverts due to Iodine depletion. In fact, Iodine doesn't help inverts molt....it CAUSES them to molt.

Why am I loosing my crustacians?

Hyposalinity is only acceptable for Fish-Only tanks as most inverts cannot handle it. You need to SLOWLY bump up your SG to 1.025~1.026 over a period of about a week. I'm sure you'll see your inverts live much longer.

OK...it's a hydroid. Just squoose them with your magnet if the population is too high.

    something(s) on glass

Sounds like a harmless spirorbid feather duster worm. Is the white circle hard and made out of Calcium? If so, thats probably what they are. They are filter feeders. Here is a Macro photo of one. Here's another

    Swimming, squirmy worm thing

It's an epitoke. When bristleworms reproduce, they grow an epitoke on the end filled with eggs and sperm (gametes). Eventually, the epitoke will separate from the parent polychaete and swim to the surface like it is on crack. Then it will explode spreading gametes into the water.

Question about mantis vs pistol shrimp...

The tilted glass trick won't work for mantis. They can swim very well. Pistols will decorate their dens with empty shells. They don't kill but they will use the shells. Mantis will kill snails and crabs. Are any of the shells broken?

    skilter filter

They claim this skimmer can be used on a 100g tank. Not even close. On your tank, it would be awesome. They can take a bit to learn how to dial in but this is even the deluxe version. It's a great deal and it's brand new.

    skilter filter

For the same amount of money, this is a much better choice. http://cgi.ebay.com/Prizm-Deluxe-Protein-Skimmer-Red-Sea-New_W0QQitemZ7726849903QQcategoryZ3212QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

    nitrate level through the roof!!!!!!!!

You need to do topoffs with RO/DI water as well. You will never have low Nitrates if you are adding it every day. Not only that. If your tapwater has that many nitrates, chances are you are adding substantial phosphates and/or silicates as well. There's an even worse possibility. A lot of...

Anybody use bottom returns on their tanks?

Many glass tanks have tempered bottoms and cannot be drilled. You can do this with acrylic tanks. I know someone setting up a coral prop tank in this manner. There are some things to consider. Namely don't go cheap on the bulkheads. If you were to have a failure on one of them, your...

I have had it with the HAIR ALGEA!!!!Please help

As long as you have decent flow and a good protein skimmer, blasting that detritus off your rock is fine. If not, start a siphon and vacuum. Additionally, manual removal can be problematic if you have a lot of P on your rocks. Algaes are sessile so they can't exactly run away when a...

I have had it with the HAIR ALGEA!!!!Please help

Great post Skinnypete. I wan't to 'tweak' it a little. LR doesn't actually 'leach'. What happens is that LR and most sands are made of CaCO3 and phosphates naturally adsorb (chemically bond) to it. Then the good-guys that perform Nitrification for us engage in their 'bad habit'. Their bad...

    Scrape Hair Algae?

It's not the end of the world. However, you want to avoid this as much as possible. Algaes are sessile so they can't exactly get up and run away when an herbivore is attacking it. Some algaes release toxins when they are grazed, some incorporate calcium to make it harder to graze, and others...

    DSB, Yes or No??

2 to 3 inches would be considered a shallow sand bed (SSB). You will get denitrification in this bed just like in a DSB. The main difference will be that because it is shallower, it will fill up quicker. On the other hand, when it comes time to replace the bed, it is much easier.

    Mantis shrimp make good pets

I've kept fish with mantis successfully long term. Smashers prefer snails and crabs and rarely go after fish unless they are starving. Spearers will go after fish but are not LR hitchhikers because they live in sand. The fear of mantis is greatly exaggerated. Most deaths that get blamed on...

    DSB, Yes or No??

If you try to overfeed with insufficient skimming, flow, and waterchanges in a BB tank and your tank will let you know that you screwed up right away. In that regard, a DSB will operate as a safety net. You can skip waterchanges, underskim, overfeed, etc. for a while and you won't see any...

    DSB, Yes or No??

The term "crash" was originally used by serious SPS keepers who also had sandbeds. It didn't mean that the tank died by a release of Hydrogen Sulphide, it referred to the point in time where the sandbed betrayed them and started putting Phosphates back into the water column. For SPS keepers...

    Mantis shrimp make good pets

Not really. That particular O.s. had just lost it's clubs in a recent molt. That still was not a wise thing to do anyway. In fact, peacocks are one of the few species that CAN break glass. The smaller ones can break thin-glassed heaters so titanium heaters are a good idea or put electrical...
