So, I came home last night to a beta fish in a jar sitting on my desk. Since I had to break down my 75g salt water tank (new apartment wont allow fish tanks larger then 10g :(), she thought this guy is something I'd want. Little did she know I am against beta fish all together. I feel bad for...
So, my new apartment doesn't allow fish tanks any larger then 10 gallons... Anyway, just wondering what am I going to expect as far as a 10 gallon. How often do am I going to have to do water changes, how much on average are lighting for a reef tank light setup, how many fish am I looking at...
So besides good filtration and flow I know is that anything that you should be adding to the water (like chemicals or salt) to make your cichlids happy?
OK so i finished breaking down my 75g SW tank, and turning it into a FW cichlid tank. My question is, I couldnt get all of the coraline algae scraped out of the tank. I was afraid to hit some of the sealant in the corners. Will the little coraline algae pose any problems later down the road?
Ok so in a chichlid tank, what is overall a better substrate to go with, gravel, or sand?
Also, for water, am I going to be using tap water with dechlorinator, or is there something special I should be throwing in there as well.
For a75g Cichlid tank, which would be better?
-Fluval FX5 retails around $199 on ebay
OR
-Pretty sure I can get around 20-30 gallon sump/return pump with bioballs for around the same price.
So, I need to unfortunately take my current 75 SW aquarium, and revert it back to a FW aquarium. I'm going to do an African Cichlid tank. Is it the same principles as a salt water tank?
Equipment:
-Powerhead
-Sump or Canister Filter
-Heater
-Sand
-Live Rock (Well I'm going to be turning my...
So whats the proper way to go about cleaning a used glass sump. It has this thin white layer of film on it (assuming its salt residue). I tried using a razor and water. It works, but barely. Would take WAY to long to do the entire thing. I didnt want to use any cleaning solutions but I might...
Trying to get rid of that green/brown algae that's starting to take over my sand. How long can my few basic corals go for without any light? Just have some Zoa's and Richordia
Alright so at first I was told it was just diatoms... Well I'm not so sure anymore. What do you guys think this is?
Also, see the little clear bubbles? What are those? How do I reverse this algae stuff? More water changes? I dont think keeping my lights off would be good for my coral.
So, I forgot the name of the coral I bought a few weeks ago (doh)... I THINK its this:
http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=597+1492+2295+2839&pcatid=2839
But it might not be... Its a very grassy looking coral. Neon green color. But its much thicker then the one in this...
... to dig into my sand so my rocks sitting on the glass and not the top of the sand? Tanks only been up for 8 months. Just dont want to stir into something nasty and have a melt down.
This usually happen over time? My pretty white sand has started turning brown. Just the top layer so far. Any ideas? Im thinking its algae. I have algae (coraline and some hard green algae) taking over the glass of my tank. I guess thats a good thing? Purple spots are everywhere. I scraped it...
So i found out that my poor hammer coral didnt die in my tank, he was eaten. Came home late last night to both of my richordias half eaten, and my peppermint shrimp picking at the nub of whats left of my hamemr coral.
I somehow managed to catch one by putting some food into a tall glass and he...
So overnight, a lot of my coralline algae on some of my rocks have went from a pretty purple to bone white, grey, and some green areas. Overnight! I didnt dose anything alst night. I did do a kalkwasser drip a few nights ago, about 1 drip every 1.5 seconds. Somehow managed to drip a full 32oz...
He wont eat the seaweed I give him.. Ive tried everything.
Putting it on the clip...
Rubber band it to a rock...
Mix it in with his meats...
Even soaking it in this vitamin stuff that is supposed to entice the fish to eat it.
All efforts have failed in trying to get him to eat the nori I...
Trying to get a good collection together of very useful tips about reef keeping. Basic stuff such as checking parameters daily, or advanced stuff like dripping supplements into the tank or whatnot. Tips that are short, sweet, and to the point. Figured this would help me and other newbie reef...
Sorry about all the questions as of late. The reef thing is still new.
Anyway, am I supposed to be feeding my corals? I'm rigging up a Kalkwasser drip system tonight. I tested my calc levels and they were good atm. Right around 400 I think.
Also, the new Hammer Coral/Frogspawn thing...
Just picked up a frag of frogspawn today. It came with 4 stalks, all about 2 inches each growing on the rock. 3 of the stalks are dead, one is alive and well. Will the alive one grow and eventually cover and hide the ugly dead stalks?
Also, random question. I turned one of my powerheads off so...
AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
Two of my corals went missing overnight!!!!! Im assuming the current from the power heads picked them up and wooshed them away. What can I do other then tear my entire tank apart?
Here are some pic's of my first coral! Sorry about the crappy photos. Camera is broken so I had to use my iPhone :eyes:. By the way, are those Zoa's or Zoo's? He called them Zoo's lol.

So my lights come in today (Yay!) And will be getting those, as well as hopefully buying a head of some zoas to start me off. So I need to start running phosphate and calcium tests correct? What are the right levels that I should be keeping those in?
I just did a water cahnge yesterday...
Ok so I live in Daytona Beach, shark bite capital of the world. Went fishing this morning and caught a mess of baby hammerhead and bonnet head sharks. So my questions is... How hard would it be to turn a good sized kiddy/above ground pool into a shark tank? I mean all I would need is some sand...
