I've got petrified wood in my paludarium, perfect for any tank. Going with petrified wood is like getting the best of both worlds, rock and wood hardscape in one! :D

I put dirt at the bottom, then a layer of sand in the front/center and this great natural looking gravel from the store. The little male badis seems to be quite angry at his own reflection. :P

For that type of scape, I bet you could pull off something nice in a Flora. Only a couple plant species with a simple one or two rock/wood hardscape. Not really, you could toss in some earth worms if you want. They'll help aerate the soil and I bet the crabs would snack on smaller ones.

Well now you know all the pitfalls of a nice vivarium build. :) If you are still worried about the land portion cleanliness... I still recommend either buying a springtail culture or a woodlice culture.

Beautiful frogs and be glad you went with cork bark! I've got a clay background in one of my vivaria and because I didn't keep it moist, it has cracked and started falling apart... Though, clay has a ton of nutritional benefits for plants, so I'm gonna see if I can salvage it somehow...

I use the API kit - 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 5ppm nitrate right now. Rescaped the plants and added a ton of java moss, here's the pair of dario dario hanging out by the front -

Got a pair of scarlet badis in there right now and they are gorgeous little things! The filter is from a cycled tank as well as all the decor.
