Trying to decide on new inhabitants

I found my koi angel belly-up this morning tangled in the guppy grass I've got growing in one corner of my tank :(. However, I gave him a proper burial at sea and am contemplating new occupants. Thoughts/suggestions? My tank is a 25 gallon tall with half the tank filled with plant growth...

    My 20G Long Planted Tank

The swing, yes. The pH level, no. An 8.0 pH level is fairly high for a tropical tank, which either means your tap water is very acidic, or your plant is consuming CO2 and is causing a pH spike. Try testing the water directly out of the faucet. If there's a noticeable difference, then you...

    My 20G Long Planted Tank

As far as testing for CO2 - the way I test is by checking pH. With a constant water hardness (carbonate hardness, KH), your pH will swing as a result of the CO2 concentrations in the water. The lower the pH, the higher the concentration of CO2 in your tank. Plants consume CO2 during light...

Thinking about ordering a Co2 System, just double checking

I agree - if you're really worried about leaks, make sure when you're assembling things the first time that you use teflon tape on the threads and don't over-tighten (one light torque with a wrench should do it, especially if you're using gaskets). And once it's all set up, do a soap-bubble...

Tropical community vs. Cichlids vs. Discus vs. What-Have-You

I'm a tropical community fish person myself - born and raised that way, so to speak, yet I hear left and right that cichlids are addicting, as are several other types of setups. I have no idea what any of the other disciplines are like, so what are your thoughts? The reason I ask is I've been...

Best way to feed frozen bloodworms?

I've got an angel and 6 danios and I've never had that problem, but I also overfeed my tank so the shrimp can get some food as well. Try feeding them a bit more, or 2x a day if you're not already

Wow, that's a lot of angels for a 10 gallon tank. You know they get BIG, right?

Would assassin snails work, or are the buggers too small?

    Hornwort

Alright, guppy grass sounds good. I'm horrible at plant ID's. I'll see if my LFS will take donations of the excess. Thanks guys!

    Hornwort

I got my hands on a handful of hornwort (ceratophyllum demersum), and over the course of a month it's turned into three or four handfuls. It's also started to put down roots. How should I go about managing this stuff? I've never needed to prune, which is half my problem, as I'm completely...

    angelfish

I've got a palm-sized koi angel in my 25 tall. The only time she'll pester the other guys (6 zebra danios) is during feeding. Otherwise she just cruises around.

    Tankmates for fullsize Koi Angel

I've got a koi angel that's about 4" top to bottom, and it's pretty aggressive, but I've had it in the tank with 6 zebra danios and they are able to get away from it when it comes after them

Converting CO2 keg tap to aquarium use - can I do it?

I've got a 5 lb CO2 bottle and a regulator with a 1/4" inside diameter needle valve and equivalent tubing that runs to a keg tap, and I want to convert the system over to my aquarium. I already have the airline tubing, reactor, and power head necessary to facilitate the set-up, but I have some...

    Attack of the snails

It's a 25 tall. I killed about 4 today, 1 got away from me. I'll try the zucchini. Is it true they lay their eggs in the substrate?

    Attack of the snails

I'm getting tiny little snails in my tank. Pretty sure they came in with one of the plants I just introduced to the tank. I've been looking for them and killing them when I find them for the past week. I've heard dosing the tank with copper will kill them, but it will also kill my Nerite...

Neon Tetra just died please help me

It's not a bad method at all. The reason I siphon is because I use 5-gallon general-purpose buckets I got at Home Depot.

    Ph?

I have a koi angel fish (Tito) that I've kept both originally by himself in a 10 gal, then as a member of a community in a 25 tall. He's by far the more hardy of the fish in my tank (next to 6 zebra danios, which are VERY hardy). What are you doing to acclimate your fish right after you bring...

Neon Tetra just died please help me

Another thing to consider with changing water - just like siphoning water out of the tank, siphon it in. Dumping the bucket into the tank all at once can shock your fish, both from temperature changes and chemical imbalances. When I'm changing my water, I remove the hood and prop the bucket on...

    Could my tank be CYCLED??

I would say do a daily water test each day for a week to see if there's any drastic changes. If you're registering low ammonia and low nitrites but some nitrates, your tank may be cycled. If you register an ammonia spike, your tank is definitely not cycled and you should begin doing pwc's...

    CO2 for dummies

No, I'm not, actually. I've got a powerhead hooked up on the opposing wall to help disperse any bubbles that come out, but thus far I haven't seen any permeate the diffuser into the tank. I've seen bubbles enter the diffuser though
