    First PROBLEM !

decomposing shrimp stink :) carbon helps a little bit but the best would be a water change and some good smelling candles or something - does your office have a window you can open to vent the air? If it gets too bad, you can remove the shrimp and switch over to pure ammonia for the cycling...

    would this little trick work?

    help me please

then I wouldnt even consider a saltwater setup. also, I wouldnt consider getting a new tank. Your 18g is a nice size for some small community fish. What kind of filter and heater do you have? As for fish selection, it matters more what you're interested in although you will still be fairly...

    Chesapeake Bay Biotope?

I imagine with proper cleaning and mechanical filtering of the sand, you could use it - I would avoid anthing on the top foot or so of the beach though and would go to a remote area and dig at least 2 feet down -- then dry the sand out and filter out anything you dont want, then clean in...

    would this little trick work?

if you can't get buckets, using salt would help. Obviously, you wouldnt just toss some in there and I personally would fill the bottom of a tube sock (clean of course) with some rice and then tie the end in a knot and toss it in the bag -- if the bag is small, you could always go grab a single...

Using fish to cycle a tank.

I agree Cinder, but to be honest, a lot of people simply don't care. When people come looking for advice, and are told "take back your fish" most don't. In pretty much every thread that get started by a newcomer who doesnt know about the Nitrogen cycle, someone does mention that it would be best...

Multiple substrates in different areas of the tank

Well freshies.....I have been pulled over the wall.

I tossed one of my shoes over the wall.... so that I am guaranteed to one day cross it when I am able to jump that high :)

    Newbie Cycling Question

yep - you are almost done :) congrats! once Ammonia and Nitrite both reach 0, you are finished... BUT you need to know (you might already) that the amount of bacteria that have built up are only enough to process the current amount of waste. Just because you are cycled doesnt necessarily mean...

    What would you do if.......

personally, I would go for a heavily planted, grassy tank with some massive (quantity, not size) schooling fish and an assortment of shrimp, plecos, loaches, cories and otos - maybe a pair of Angels to rule over them all.

Pics ... Tell me what's wrong, here's my tests

I would check your PO4 levels as well - high PO4 seems directly related to algae as is high Fe. You want your PO4 levels between 1 and 1.5ppm and your NO3 around 15-20 ppm. thats all I can offer, as I'm currently battling a raging algae storm in my tank :(

this is one of the more disturbing topics on these forums methinks.

    1 gallon

when I rescued a beta from my friend in college (before having my guppys) it used to cruise around in my 20 planted tank - he was probably one of the happiest Petco betas ever. I think people assume betas just sit there and do nothing, but then most people don't see betas in enough water to DO...

what friendly inverts do you have?

I have cherry, ghost and a bamboo shrimp - all are perfectly fine in a community setup. I don't personally know much about the clams, but arent they a colder water species? might be fine in a goldie tank - they also stay buried in the substrate from what I understand and you never really see em...

    Macro pictures

I'm not overly familiar with that model, but is it auto-focusing for you or do you have the option to manually focus? If it is autofocusing, usually the display will show you what it is focusing on after pushing the button down halfway, then you can adjust the camera so that the subject is in...
