Need help with Angels (fresh water)

There isn't any other reason than my presence in front of the tank when I feed them. Tank is well away from any home activities since its in the basement, no people other than my wife and I. This behavior recently started, they were the total opposite, as they grew they got more and more easily...

Need help with Angels (fresh water)

I am not new at aquarium fish and have kept angel fish for years, but I need help and thought I'd post here. About 4 months ago I purchased 4 small/medium angels and were doing very good, no aggression and all ate very well and growing at a nice rate. Here is the problem, within the last...

    cichlids in a 40 breeder.

Depending on their size. I would put around 8 very small juvies realizing that eventually you might have to take them out into a bigger tank. I have done this many times with cichlids, I recently had 13 Mbunas in a 55 gallon for about 2 years and did very well, just a couple of weeks ago I sold...

Newbie Needs Help - What Happened??

Well... Im not sure about the salt you added, that could have changed water conditions, also the fact that you did not cycle your filter, added the fish and then the food. Water parameters can change quickly in a 10 gallon. Were the fish swimming on top like if they were gasping for air? Maybe...

    Just Some Questions

I think you should work towards getting your water conditions in shape before adding anything else. What filter do you have?

    Canister Filters

I would rather have 2 filters than just one, Rather than using say a Fluval 405 or equal, I have 3-203 Fluvals on my 55 gallon, I know I could get by with just two but I had an extra one so I use it, they also provide the tank with a more even current all throughout and yes you can service one...

    Best Automatic Feeder?

Perhaps the automatic feeder overfed your fish? I dont think a week is bad to leave them without food if they are healthy, I'd rather leave my fish without food for a week than have either the feeder or someone overfeed them. Can you set the autofeeder to feed your fish every two days rather...

How often do fishes jump out of the water...?

What kind of fish was it? The only fish I had jump out of my tank have been arowanas, they have found the smallest hole on the cover. My African mbuna tank is uncovered and I have kept angels for years uncovered, Im surprised not to have found a dried up mbuna on the floor, they are very hyper.

    Tank won't cycle

The thing is not to clean the filter at this stage but if you can do just as mudraker says and get some gravel from your LFS into your filter, I believe your tank will cycle a lot faster at this point. Even after cycling you should not clean the filters to often unless you over feed but anytime...

    Tank won't cycle

This is from my experience only... do not waste your money on so called "bacteria in a bottle" and yes the rise in ammonia is part of the cycle and I would not clean the filter since that might disturb the cycling process as well. One thing that will speed up your cycle is taking some gravel or...

    Canister or Sump?

So will a sump actually help keep nitrates down vs a canister? How?

Will this dresser be ok for my 20 gallon long?

Opening and closing drawers might make your fish dart about.

Fish have all died - What did I do wrong?

I have bought tanks in garage sales where they were probably used for keeping reptiles or who knows what, I take them in the back of the house and just hose the heck out of it and using a soft sponge I just scrub inside all over, no chemicals just water, and rinse some more, then I fill it with...

    Water and Substrate

I'm using pool filter sand, 9 bucks for 50 pounds and since I put it in my mbuna fish are more active digging and rearranging the landscape, it's actually fun to watch them dig their own little hide spots.

I wanted to kinda dip in SW

Not sure what is in your area as far as a local fish shop but the bigger chain stores like Petco and Petsmart have good deals on filters and powerheads, they also have sales on salt mix from time to time. A ten gallon is ok but I agree with thincat going with a little bigger tank, with a bigger...

    Swords with Ick and fungus?!

For ich, I have used the heat tratment with salt in the entire tank (African cichlids) rather than medicating, 82-84 degrees F and not sure about the water/salt ratio but I didn't use much, something like a tablespoon for every 5-10 gallons. I dont know how this would affect the fungus though.

I just got a saltwater tank and i need help

You need to cycle your tank properly, there is no way around it. I wont get into the details since its rather long but you can do a search on the net or here on Aquarium Advice there is plenty of information on how to cycle a tank the right way. I wish some of the LFS would explain the cycling...

    Red Oscar didnt make it.

Too bad about your Oscar. I remember having Oscars in the past and them jumping and banging against the cover many times, I guess if it wasn't for the cover it would have flown right out. I worry with most cichlids, they are very hyper. One fish I always had problems with were Arowanas these...

    The Green Texas are gone!

Wow! 15 fish is half stocked!? I do agree there is a "tank boss" mine is a Johanni, chases a few of the guys once in a while and loves center stage, but not overly aggressive yet.

    The Green Texas are gone!

20 to 25 fish might be ok when they are small, I dont know, that sounds a bit too crowded for a 60 gallon, one problem I see is the 2 Johanni, I as well started with two of those along with 5 yellow labs, an albino, a couple of peaceful Acei, an orange one as well....anyway at the moment I have...
