Why is my pH going up?

So I uploaded some image of my tank and my fish in case anybody in interested in seeing how I am doing with all the replied I've sent. My Juwel RIO 180 tank, 6 weeks old. - Aquarium Advice Gallery Overview Of Our Freshwater Aquarium, 6th Of November 2010 - This is our 180 liters Juwel tank 8...

Why is my pH going up?

Thank you JohnPaul for your lengthy reply, really appreciated. We'll all agree that changing the water regularly is important for the aquarium and my post wasn't trying to deny that in any way. What we are disagreeing on is how often and when this must be done. I am still trying to get a...

Why is my pH going up?

My tap water is at pH 7.2 - 8.2 so changing the water would not lower the pH. Also, NO2 and NO3 readings are fine so because of that I would not need to change the water. What I was wondering of is what are the factors the contribute to higher pH? I want to try to impact the root cause...

Why is my pH going up?

I agree - again :) But if you don't have a properly cycled tank (as I do, and many beginners) then this will be a critical factor for you. And looking at the readings on the web page, the proportion of toxic ammonia is decreasing to a ratio of squared with lower pH. Which makes it something I...

Why is my pH going up?

That is true - but with lower pH, your toxic ammonia levels are also lower. So being as close to neutral is better than high levels. Aquaworld Aquarium - The Ammonia and pH Relationship Thanks for your reply. I'll focus on the pH more after a few weeks when I hope the cycle is totally complete.

    my ammonia levels wont drop!

Yes, but if you change water every day and use easilife, the water change will cancel any effect you would want from the bacteria growth. When you are cycling your tank, you don't want to change the water - until the ammonia or NO2 levels rise to dangerous levels. Which they shouldn't with...

    my ammonia levels wont drop!

I would say changing the water every day will prevent you from completing the N cycle. I am sure there are others with other opinions, but the best thing IMHO for you to do is to add some bacteria product (I've used Tetra SafeStart) and add that every day for a short period until you notice...

Why is my pH going up?

I have a 45 gallon Juwel RIO tank with not that many fish (10x guppy, dwarf gourami, 2x platy, 2x tetra) because for now I concentrate on getting the tank going and growing plants. Later I will put in more fish. Anyway, my problem is that the pH value is going up although I've understood that...

    General water change rules?

I appreciate your advice and the honesty! :) Yes, I've never bought any De-nitrate or Am-locks - if you need them, you are already in trouble with the tank. I'll just go and change some water now. Been a week since last time.

    General water change rules?

I am maybe embarrassed to say this, but this is new to me :) Thanks. It of course all makes sense, and I guess I (among others it seems) are just afraid to disrupt the N cycle. I actually like to do the water change so I don't mind changing it every week. This thread gives me confidence that I...

    General water change rules?

Thank you very much! :) That makes sense indeed. So you think my water change plan not frequent enough? But again, I guess it also depends on the tank in question. I mean, larger tanks in general require less frequent water change - but depending on the amount of fish in them. I've heard that...

    General water change rules?

So you mean I cannot change my water often enough (after the N-cycle is complete, I guess)? Hmm - this is so confusing since I hear the opposite too from different sources. I use Tetra AquaSafe but I guess that's the same thing as Prime. It's not that expensive compared to other expenses with...

    General water change rules?

I don't have an ammonia test, but I have tested my NO2 and NO3. NO2 shows 0.05 and NO3 10. Pretty normal AFAIK. How often do you do this? Under what conditions do you change up to 90% of the water? This sounds pretty much to me. But I guess as long as the NO2 is not rising, there is little...

    General water change rules?

This is my first message on this forum, but it would probably also be the first question I ask from a fellow aquarium hobbyist. How should I change my water? I've heard probably as many advice about this as there are people giving them. Really. Some say that a small amount (10-15%) of water...

Greetings from the land of the snow, Finland!

Hello everyone! I found your forum by accident, but it seems I should have come here a lot earlier. Your forum is filled with active experienced user and some great articles from fellow aquariumists (or what should we be called?). Nice to be here! I currently have a 180 liters Juwel RIO 180...
