Nope. Very few bacteria live in the water column. The vast, vast majority live and colonize the filter, with some colonizing the substrate, plants, decorations, etc.

You are correct that it's better to keep your ISO low and try to balance your aperture and your shutter speed first. Your aperture controls how much light is let in and your shutter for how long. Generally, you want a higher shutter speed if you can because they will result in sharper images...

Just tested their parameters roughly 12 hours after introduction, and ammonia and nitrites are at 0, nitrates at 10. :) They're active little buggers and quite difficult to get pictures of with my phone. I'll have to break out the big camera after classes tonight :) It's fun to watch them...
