    Help planning heavily planted microtank

Thanks everyone! It's been a while since I've frequented these forums, and now that you mention it, I do remember nano/pico being the preferred terminology, which should help with my searching through the forums! :) Thanks! And thanks for all the starting suggestions, too! It'll be a while...

    Help planning heavily planted microtank

Hey folks -- I ran a highly successful 40 gallon or so tank from December 2010 (really February 2011 by the time the fishless cycle finally finished) - May of this year. I had to sell it (TEARS!) when I moved out/separated from my husband and as I get ready to move into the house I just bought...

    Moving?

Alright so our move is imminent. The results here are 50/50 split on whether it's safe to change substrate at this point. Based on other things I've read around here, I tend to think that it is safe since most of the bacteria will be in the filter. Is this a good or bad assumption? We're trying...

    Moving?

That's basically what we were thinking. We have a couple 5gallon buckets we were going to do that in. How soon should we start moving them into the tank, etc.? I was kind of thinking of setting up our 20 gallon in the new place before we start moving in a location that won't be disturbed much...

    Moving?

Hey folks! It's been a while since I've been around! Our tank is going great, a school of 12-15 (I can never count fast enough!) cardinals, 3 false julii corys and recently, one angelfish and a ton of plants whose names I can't remember which are doing really well under a lamp whose specs I also...

For Sale: Updated stock list- hot nano fish and others!

Um... I'm not really sure. We have a 36 gallon and recently had an explosion of snails a couple of days ago -- however many you think it will take to keep the pond snails under control?

Do you have any assassin snails currently?

    To start over or not???

Under normal circumstances, as I believe BigJim stated, such massive changes are not necessarily recommended, however, frequent water changes are. However, in this case, the ammonia level is so high that the danger of ammonia poisoning outweighs the dangers of massive water changes. (Я вижу...

    To start over or not???

Nope. Very few bacteria live in the water column. The vast, vast majority live and colonize the filter, with some colonizing the substrate, plants, decorations, etc.

What's the hardest fish you've tried to photograph?

You are correct that it's better to keep your ISO low and try to balance your aperture and your shutter speed first. Your aperture controls how much light is let in and your shutter for how long. Generally, you want a higher shutter speed if you can because they will result in sharper images...

What's the hardest fish you've tried to photograph?

hah! I'm glad I refreshed before I clicked submit! I almost responded again and we would have been going in circles :D hehe

What's the hardest fish you've tried to photograph?

I tend to not ever use my flash, and all of our lights are bendable, for lack of a better word, so I point them away from the tank, but they still provide ambient lighting that helps. My aperture has been low, but I'm pretty sure a high shutter speed is definitely helpful when you have quick...

what size tank do you have??

We started with a 29 gallon we found on Craigslist in December and started cycling. Three weeks ago, a seal started to go, so we upgraded to a 36 gallon bowfront. It just finished cycling this week and we started slowly stocking it last night :) This week we're getting our 10 gallon quarantine...

What's the hardest fish you've tried to photograph?

My God. I'm a professional photographer. I know my way around a camera. But these fish are, (a) fast, and (b) I can't say I've ever tried taking pictures through glass before. I also think I don't have the right focal length for a lens to do the job. This is going to take more serious work...

    Fishless cycle

You want to do a PWC to get it to 4 at the max, otherwise it will stall / take forever. :)

    Cycle complete! Stocking questions :)

Will do -- how much should I do? Also, I'm having a heck of a hard time photographing these suckers! Going through the glass of the aquarium, plus how fast they move (and it's not bright enough in here) is proving to make for some difficult photos -- and I'm a professional photographer! I'm...

    Cycle complete! Stocking questions :)

Sadly, I came home to a single dead fish. S/he was caught on the filter intake. I quickly performed a water test, and all the results were good: ammonia/nitrites at 0, nitrates between 10 and 15. I then went ahead and turned off the filter so it would release the fish and then netted it out and...

    Cycle complete! Stocking questions :)

Just tested their parameters roughly 12 hours after introduction, and ammonia and nitrites are at 0, nitrates at 10. :) They're active little buggers and quite difficult to get pictures of with my phone. I'll have to break out the big camera after classes tonight :) It's fun to watch them...

    Fishless cycle

Happy to! The day I went out looking for the **** stuff, it took me four or five stops. Happy to help someone avoid such unnecessary gas usage if I can :)
  21. E

    To start over or not???

Just keep doing this -- you might have to do a lot of 50% water changes before your ammonia gets down below .25ppm, but it will be worth it! Once the levels are down, monitor them and make sure they stay down via PWC as necessary. However, if you want, you can always ask if your LFS will take...

Species that count agaist your tank

+1 If you're going to add anything, I would add a couple more neons so that they can school together. You can also use AqAdvisor - Intelligent Freshwater Tropical Fish Aquarium Stocking Calculator and Aquarium Tank/Filter Advisor to help give you general guidelines for your tank stocking...

    Fishless cycle

Ace Hardware is where most of us have had luck finding pure Ammonia. I've also read about people finding it in WalMarts -- it's definitely a tricky substance to find! If you have any janitorial supply shops around, they would carry it as well. Just remember, no soaps or surfactants -- just pure...
