Death of my pom pom crab

I went away for 4 days and came back to a bit of a green algae bloom :D. I was unable to find my pom pom crab in any of her usual spots. It's a 10G tank, so I can usually see her. She is now MIA for many weeks and presumed killed in action :(. Can anybody offer ideas why? There is no predator...

Clam looks bad after attack of the cleaner shrimp

I introduced a derasa clam and a cleaner shrimp at the same time about 2 months ago. All my research led me to believe they're compatible. They had been doing fine since. But yesterday I saw the shrimp pulling at the clam's mantle. He tore the edge of one of the clam's openings. I placed a...

Care for pom-pom crab with eggs

Hello all, not sure if this is the best forum for this question. I saw just today that my pom-pom crab is toting a cluster of bright orange eggs! Can I take special care to hatch these, or do they not stand a chance to survive in my tank? Livestock are listed in my signature.

    Amphipod or baby mantis?

Thanks for the reply. I annotated the images for clarity. It's funny how the eye sees things that I know are there :)

    Amphipod or baby mantis?

After adding certain rocks from the LFS I began noticing amphipods. They multiplied rather quickly and look like the profile photo below with the black background. There's a larger (9 mm) creature that looks similar to the others, except its antennae are longer (about 6mm) and I can see two...

    White blotch on clown

I just noticed this white blotchiness today behind the fish's right eye, on the orange skin. Can anyone help me out with this? When I got him from the store, one of the other clowns in the tank had a bad case of some parasite around its head. I wonder could it be the same thing? 1. This wild...

    Small white snail

White snail siphoning from corals I found this guy again wedged in among GSP. Its siphon was extended into the center of a polyp. I still don't know what it is, but given that it looks like it's eating from corals, I'm pretty decided to get rid of it. But I can't pry it out without pulling the...

    Lunar lighting for 10G reef

I just installed a LED strip for lunar lighting. Here are some shots of the tank and how it lights up some hermatypic inhabitants.

    Blue derasa clam

Here are pics of my new derasa clam, named Chowder. I put him in sandy substrate, but I'm concerned that some hermits are digging Chowder up to get at his foot. Anyone else have this problem? How deep into the sand should the clam be buried? Must it always be oriented with the mantle upward...

    Anyone Have LED Tank Lights??

I just installed some DIY LED strips to augment my daylight standard fluor bulbs and to add lunar light to my 10G reef. Since I don't have a workshop at home, I didn't build it from scratch. Instead, I assembled parts and mounted them in the fluor fixtures. Cost was about $40 for 2X 20" strips...

    Is high alk dangerous?

I am using Instant Ocean reef master test kit to monitor water in a 10G tank. Initially, pH = 7.8 and alk 3.5. After supplementing water with Seachem marine buffer, pH = 8.3, but and alk = 7.0 (which is outside the kit's range) according to test kit! Is this expected or dangerous to livestock?

sticking frag disc to rock? what to use?

Can I use Aquastix or super glue gel to attach a frag of LR to a larger rock? LFS said I would need superglue and would have to remove the LR from the tank first to dry the spot before I apply glue. I'm looking for something that will allow me to work entirely underwater.

    journy to sw nano reef

Even if you build it up gradually, start with some LR when you first fill it with water. Add sand after all the rock is in place and you've done your aquascaping.

    swimming gobies?

We have a chromis with a false percula clown in 10g. They swim together, but the chromis prefers a school. Maybe a cleaner shrimp would do them well? How about a small wrasse?

    Rainford Goby help!

It usually takes a new fish 4 to 7 days to start relaxing in a new environment. If everything is OK he shud start eating within a week.

    Hermits snacking on feather duster

How do I protect the feather duster from hungry hermits? I've had a feather duster in the tank for a month+ now but have had to keep relocating and reburying it because some mischievous dwarf red hermits keep pulling it up to pick at the soft purple sheath. I've tried burying it 1-2" in sand...

    Small white snail

Today I saw this guy parked next to my ricordea. His siphon was stretched all the way to the oral disc of the mushroom. Is this damaging? What's it doing?

What's the low-down on reef moonlighting?

So what is the difference between actinic light and lunar light? Both are around the same wavelength of blue. Is it simply a matter of brightness?

What's the low-down on reef moonlighting?

I'm trying to understand what the purpose is for moonlight in a reef aquarium. Is it functional to the livestock, or simply aesthetic? I've heard two perspectives: 1. So-called "moonlight" is a low-power light of a color that is imperceptible by livestock in the tank. The purpose is to allow...

How to dose supplements in nano tank?

I'm aware that supplementing a nano tank risks sudden changes in water conditions. The reason I want to do it here is that my pH is low. Even with regular PWC, it doesn't correct itself because a fresh prep of saltwater to SG=1.023 has pH 8.0 using Oceanic mix. () Nitrates are 10 mg/L, phos...
