What makes API superior? I was looking at the Red Sea kits.

MR X, did you do the rinse w/ SW, RO water? Do you think it's OK to rinse w/ mineralized fresh water from a well? Even though it's a small amount of water , do you think it would add contaminants to a new start up tank? Thanks N83259

I'm a SW newbie w/o much hands on skimmer knowlege. But I saw a mature Oceanic bio cube w/ skimmer first hand. It had some funky stuff in there so I must assume it was doing something. LFS owner said OK but not great. He advised careful, low bio loads & water changes as you (Mr X) did w/ this...

Ready to Dive into Saltwater :)

All that info is on the net in bits & pieces. if you like old school books (made of paper), check out THE NEW MARINE AQUARIUM by Michael S. Paletta. Every LFS has it. Excellent, comprehensive, cheap & everyone of your questions are answered An EZ read too.

I just rec'd my Red Sea Max 250L(65 gal) today and am no SW expert. But I did research all the others like Oceanic, JBJ & RSM. All are good IMO & according to reviews. My LFS owner says the Oceanic skimmer is OK. I saw the negative Oceanic skimmer posts too but suspect newbies who had nothing to...

Clean the outside of my tank so u cant see and salt lines

Wipe it off before it dries. White vinegar & water solution will remove some salt deposits. Keep it outside the tank as it's acidic & could change SW PH.

new tank setup- filter seeded from established tank

It does indeed sound like a fungus but I've never seen it come in pink. Thats a fast death from fungus though....you may have other water problems. First get a new sponge. Second decontaminate every thing with a mild bleach solution, and rinse, rinse and rinse again. Frogs don't need established...

    What do I have?

Most newts need some time out of the water. do you have a vivaria set up that has a terrestrial area and deeper water? I wouldn't just throw them in a standard chic lid tank. I could not ID your newt, but being an amphibian, it's safe to assume it needs time out of the water. I doubt it will...

    Live Rock Installation

OK so now I'm mantis shrimp paranoid! Is LFS LR more likely to be M shrimp free for some reason? I do try to support local small businesses, but my LFSs have a so-so selection. Minimal life, almost all boulder shape, plus twice the price. Maybe thats a good thing b/c all hitch hikers, good and...

    Live Rock Installation

Thanks for the replies. I've only read a little about the mantis shrimp. What's the downside with them....do they kill small fish? What's the chance of zapping all of them? Are they expert hiders or are eggs/larvae an issue where they'll hatch even if the adults are removed? Also I was...

    Live Rock Installation

My 65 gallon system should be up and running next week & I have a question about buying and adding live rock. I'm going to order about 75lbs of cultured Atlantic LR plus some rubble from the Live Rock Ranch. It's been aquacultured off the Florida Keys and the pics look good. I was planning on...

    Lighting: Number of Hours?

Sometimes I don't get home until 8, 9 or 10pm on a regular basis. So I was thinking of setting the light timer to go off around midnight so I could have a few hours to enjoy the aquarium in the evenings. But in the winter at my lattitude, sunrise is about 7:30 am this time of year.I understand...

    Battery backup???

Well, when I used this method once, the police didn't come, but my neigbor wondered what was going on. That night an ice storm downed a big oak tree and it took out the street's main power line. I talked to the power company crew forman and he said it could be 8 hours plus before the power came...

    Battery backup???

Here's a back-up idea that will work in an emergency and isn't too expensive: Get a power inverter designed to work off your car battery. They come in 250W & up -size it to the equipment you need to run in an outage. Get one that has clips that connect directly to your auto battery terminals...

DI Needed in an RO System?

Hello everyone, new member, 1st post. Great forum BTW, I've learned a bunch. I was wondering how important deionization (DI) is to include in a RO system. An article archived here says the primary function of DI in salt aquaria is to remove phosphate ions. I have water from a well dug into a...
