    pH just keeps dropping...but WHY?

If it is my rock, why do all the warnings that go with it warn of high pH, not low pH! After all cement is highly caustic not acidic, but once it's cured it's basically just rock again! Plus I was over careful in curing it!

    pH just keeps dropping...but WHY?

Well I guess that lasts a lot longer than any chemical test kit, so it works out cheaper in the end??? Also I've removed the drift wood, and after an initial slight rise in pH it's plummeted again D: I have been adding reef buffer daily, I added some to a small cup and the parameters instantly...

    Emerald Crabs

I'm really interested in encouraging all the small encrusting and varied marine life on my live rocks, I'm not so much interested in having a few large creatures as having thousands of tiny ones, so my question is for my clean up crew, are emerald crabs right for me? Are they vegetarian or will...

So this pH meter, prices? Have you spent more on it and solutions then you would have for test kits?

    pH just keeps dropping...but WHY?

It's an awesome piece of heartwood from a gnarled piece of mangrove root, about 1.5 feet long and at most 1 inch diameter, so not a huge piece of root, pH chemistry seems to have a few strange differences between SW and FW, but yeah it might help, thanks

    pH just keeps dropping...but WHY?

Yeah I will remove it, I have a load of rubble in there already, I just thought the driftwood might help even more, I may have been wrong!

    pH just keeps dropping...but WHY?

Well surely they die in salt water, and are replaced by salt water inhabitants?

    pH just keeps dropping...but WHY?

pH of RO and salt mix are both fine, I'm using aragonite sand,1-2 mill, so slightly grainier than sugar grade, Does drift wood affect pH? I have had a tropical tank for years with a piece if drift wood in, and I thought it could be a haven for nitrogen cycle bacteria so I placed it in my sump...

    pH just keeps dropping...but WHY?

My calcium AND Alk levels are fine and my pH is still low I mean! I also have some Kalk and I cooked some baking soda, so additive wise I think I'm fully covered? I'm not worried about magnesium or strontium just yet, as i currently have no corals in my tank (I only have 1snail :C )

    pH just keeps dropping...but WHY?

I had a Calcium and Alk two part buffer already but my Calcium levels are fine, so I've bought some of the pH up stuff you gave me the link for, thanks guys :D

What happens chemically when i add bicarbinate of soda to my tank?

Thanks ccCapt :D Do you know how long I need to bake it for and how I can tell it is baked? And does the pH come back up again once the co2 has dissolved out of the water?

What happens chemically when i add bicarbinate of soda to my tank?

Is baking soda different to bicarbonate of soda?

    pH just keeps dropping...but WHY?

My water movement is definitely not the problem here, and I'm taking readings all the time, besides it's too low to just be a natural fluctuation!

What happens chemically when i add bicarbinate of soda to my tank?

Well I don't know but I know what a buffer is, it is a reversible reaction, which means under normal circumstances it is reacting and reacting back constantly, if it is reacting forward and backward at the same rate it's equilibrium leaves it at 50:50 half of the reactants and half the products...

What happens chemically when i add bicarbinate of soda to my tank?

By balanced I mean I'm adding bicarbonate only but the KH includes other compounds, some of which are important, so is adding purely bicarbonate pushing any equilibriums off where they should be?
  19. S

    pH just keeps dropping...but WHY?

Not in this tank it won't, not at this rate anyhow! Plus bicarbonate costs me £0 as I have a ton already for use in my dads pool. So would it work? I know it will ^ salinity and KH at the same time, but on it's own will it unbalance anything?

    pH just keeps dropping...but WHY?

Can I use bicarbonate if soda instead? Funds are a little dry at the moment!!!

What happens chemically when i add bicarbinate of soda to my tank?

I have read online that instead of using expensive reef buffers I can add bicarbonate of soda, however I am Struggling to pin down exactly how adding it alone helps, I mean sure it raises KH but not in a balanced way, or am I wrong, can anyone help?

    16 gal build thread

Cool tank :D but where is the skimmer?
  23. S

    pH just keeps dropping...but WHY?

I did some sums on the rebuild and calculated that i couldn't afford it :( Ok so I did a large water change obv, (using high quality makeup water :P) and added kalkwasser to boost the KH calcium and pH, so now Calcium is above 500, KH is about 8 and pH is still about 7.7... If I add more buffer...
