Oh gosh.. something else. Was planning on getting to the fish store today or tomorrow and I was looking at the tank and noticed tiny white strings floating around. Short, maybe 1/4" or less long.
I read this might be some kind of algae? I don't think it could be a 'bug' or anything like that...
Oh yes, all males. I had an accidental baby issue a few months ago I posted about when Petsmart sold me a female they thought was a male. The store didn't want to help me so I had to email corporate to get them to take the babies and exchange the fish for a male (the guy who just died, in fact)...
Ok, so we're one week out now. Everything has been cleaned well (sans filter media and biowheel). I've only ever cleaned the plants and decor in tank water, and I could never get them very clean. One blast with hot water from the sink and they're brand new!
Now, the tank is just hanging out...
Oh, I know. I started out knowing nothing, but for the most part there is definitely a consensus among the vast majority of posters about how to do things. I go with the majority, because I have no personal experience to offer! It was just kind of funny to me that it seemed to happen in my last...
I certainly wouldn't presume to educate anyone in fishkeeping, and I'm not sure how that could have possibly been read from my posts.
I simply did not understand what you were talking about or getting at.
Check, check, check and check. :)
Just trying to figure out what the other poster was getting at..
It seems in the threads I start there is one new poster who has very.. interesting ideas.. that are the opposite of all the information I have gleaned from this site!
Ok then... but I'm not seeing how this applies to my situation. You say I should just "leave it alone". The only thing I'm doing is PWC's about once a week. Are you suggesting that "chore" isn't necessary?
I don't see that as "messing with" the tank. Just routine maintenance.
The way you word...
I think you're right. I just assumed it was something I was doing and not the store..
I don't shop at Wal-Mart at all, much less for live animals. I've researched some LFS in St. Louis that I am going to try out. There are none on this side of the river. :( Well, actually, there is one...
Yes, basically. I did try a couple of platies in the beginning. One died pretty quickly, and the other lasted a few months. All the fish came from the same store.
Going to try to answer some of the questions posted. As an update, I did go ahead and clean my decor and plants really well. Did a kind of "deep-cleaning" I wasn't able to while there were fish still in the tank. Left the filter alone. It has a carbon filter, which I don't change like they...
That's funny! What's weird about me is I can't eat fish. It's all mental - I don't think it tastes bad, but I start to gag because it freaks me out. I'm terribly creeped out by all manner of sea creatures (especially octopi!), so it's kind of strange that I enjoy having an aquarium. I only like...
Hopefully, when we get settled into a house and I can upgrade I'll have less issues. If nothing else, when I have die-offs it won't be as devastating to the overall stock. I don't want anything really huge, I honestly really enjoy the 10-gallon. But, I'd like to have a wider variety of stock...
Thanks for the advice, everyone. I am feeling a little more positive. I'm going to go ahead and use this opportunity to give everything a good cleaning, but leave the filter media alone. If there was any bad stuff hanging out in there, it will be gone and I can start "fresh" so to speak.
I've...
My original plan was to have guppies, but then I wanted one larger fish so that is when I got the Dalmation Molly. I did have 2 at one point.. I was going by the stock calculator site. Can't recall the name, but I'm sure you now the one.
I wouldn't be opposed to just having a beta actually...
I use the API liquid testing kit.
I forgot you could feed with flakes... that is good to remember so I don't have to go on a search for ammonia. How long can I sustain the bacteria with flakes before I need to add a fish?
It is just a 10-gallon. I really don't want to give up. I love it having it. But, I'm just frustrated that I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. If I don't know the problem, I can't fix it. I hate that feeling!
Maybe the "random die-offs" seem bigger for me because I only have a few fish in the...
Is there a black-thumb equivalent for keeping fish? That's what I feel like.
I set up my tank in February and have lost a number of fish in that time. I can write off a few, dying immediately after they came home as being sick from the store. But, my main problem is fish that live 3-4 months...
I stressed to the worker that I wanted a male because I already had a male and I did NOT want breeding. I only have a 10-gallon tank and no plans to upgrade at this time. She even had another worker come and confirm that the fish I chose was a male. I guess it's been about a month to month and a...
Just an update, I kept the broken shell snail and he is doing fine. It seems like the top layer of the shell (gold) flaked off but there is still something underneath (white).
Going to get some of the cuddle bone since it can't hurt.
