    German Blue Rams (GBR)

What kind of sturcture does your tank have? Angels will pair up and kind of establish a school. 1 Angel will always be the one getting picked on, he needs some structure, drift wood and or plants to escape. In general 1 angel will be boss, if you have one very aggressive angel then a school...

    Building an aquarium

Make sure the glass is of acceptable quality. By that I mean clarity and strength. http://www.garf.org/tank/buildtank.asp Is a good calculator, obviously as your glass is 1/2 and not 3/8ths some changes would have to be made.

    German Blue Rams (GBR)

Actually I just cleared out 3/4s of the plants.. it was over grown. I then planted towards the back of the tank to open more up. The plants look a little bad at the bottom cause they weren't getting any light.

    German Blue Rams (GBR)

I've had them for about 4 months, I just sold my first batch of juvies from the spawning. I"ve found that keep them at 78-82 keeps them happy and more colored. Also these get fed brine shrimp, Daphna, freeze dried blood worms and flakes. Lighting is also key. I have a grow bulb and an antic...

    Lake Superior gravel

Since I live on the south shore... I"d say its fine as long as you use a bleach wash or something... rock type might matter. I put about 300 agates in my 20 long, 3 years no issues.

    New tank build.

I've built several tanks... local glass stores. Depending on how tall you want to make your tank and if you care about having a brace in the middle you can go with 1/4 inch plate which is pretty standard. Not sure what your dimensions are but 1/4 inch plate can be used up to 18 inchs high with...

    Plywood Tanks questions .

Plywood tanks are roughly the same if not more expensive then making a glass aquarium from scratch. I think that if you can cut glass or have a good glassier in the area who won't charge an arm and a leg glass is cheaper and easier to work with.

Is this true about German Blue Rams?

I find that Actin blue brings out rams colors really nicely. My breeding pair looks just like yours but there about a week post spawn, which explains there colors. Took my first batch of rams about a month or maybe even 6 weeks to look truly awesome.

    Sick hatchet!!!

Depending on your water quality I"ve always found more is better. A python water changer is the best investment ever.

    Sick hatchet!!!

What %? Once a week 50% water changes for me, haven't had ich or anything like that since... At least 10 years.

    Sick hatchet!!!

Water Changes are key for them. I keep marbled though, which are a little different.

    Sick hatchet!!!

Good, aren't they pretty? I"ve found that hatchets seem pretty delicate moving water, but once there acclimated they tend to be good. Fortunately my LFS and I both use well water from the same aquifer which helps a lot.

    Sick hatchet!!!

Silver hatchets don't hug the top quite as much as marbled hatchets, but they do stay in the top 1/3rd of the water right? And as for eating more... look at them head on. There really really skinny fish. I expect a cardinal tetra and a hatchet fish to eat about the same.

    Sick hatchet!!!

Bloodworms my guys love, pellets they ignore. Do you have any plants on the surface? Mine love to cruise under the duckweed I keep in mine. Other then that once they adjust they seem to be fine.

    Sick hatchet!!!

Don't move them. Silver Hatchets are fairly temperamental. If you recently added a bunch of them only losing one is a pretty good show. If over the next few days they don't start hanging out in the top water I'd get worried. Also hatchets don't eat a lot of flake food. If you look at them...

    Sick hatchet!!!

Are you sure there hatchet fish? My marbled hatchets only rarely go down into the mid water area, and never to the bottom. http://www.fishchannel.com/images/article-images/freshwater-aquariums/marbled-hatchetfish-500.jpg...

a hatchet fish? A health unstressed hatchet fish should be hanging out at the top of the tank.

    Discus question

But a 55 would be fine?
  22. P

    Discus question

So, I have read that a 55 gallon is good for them as well, read about 6-8 in a 55. Not seeing much difference in a 45 as far as size. Okay, more reading seems to be 10 gallons per discus smallest group should be a group of 4.

    Discus question

I have a 35 and a 45 gallon tank. They are both... jump cycled. I used gravel/ filters and water that had been running in a 10/20 gallon tank for the 35/45. My question is, would Discus be happy in either and how many would be safe? I haven't kept discus but have kept and bred angels and...

    DIY Plywood tank

Well, the water test failed, I missed silicone on about an inch long section at the top of the viewing window. And this is a test bed for a much larger tank, 24x48 front viewing pane, but with the same wood border. That would give it a 22x46 inch viewing area, and a tank height of 28 inches...

    DIY Plywood tank

So, here's my DIY Plywood tank. But for the actual plywood sheet which I had lying around I spent under 20 dollars, which, given the outside dimensions of 24x20x12 means I probably managed about $1 per gallon. I used plywood, screws and glue, a stain (2 coats) , a polyurethane (3 coats)...
