I've always use Crystal Clear and it's worked everytime. It cleared up my 55 in less than 15 mins.

Depends on the bags, and the kind of fish. I'm not a sure on ammonia but I do know that some bags are "breathable" letting in fresh oxygen and letting out C02. Our fish at work only travel about 30 mins to us, but I don't know how long they're in the bags.

Both of my Plecos that are in my 55 were bought before I was born by my parents and I'm 18. We also have Corys that are like 17, and our Oscar is like 10-13 I think.

There's a few places in the far west 'burbs. PetLand in Batavia where I work is good for freshwater fish. The PetCo and PetSmarts near us don't have any "rare" fish but the fish they do have are healthy. All of that is a little bit of a drive for you though.

If you can find it try and get some Bio-Spira, the freshwater stuff is on back order for a year but I've heard some stores have it. If you can't find that get something called Bio balls from you LFS's tanks if the tanks are healthy.

I think that the Betta and the Platies will get along without any major confrontations but the Gouramis in my experience will take a hit out on the Betta and leave him sleeping with the fishes.

At work when we do this we gravel vac it out. Pretty easy, it does start float around but just wait for it to settle before syphoning more out.
