this a good sump set up?

The bioballs are going to get green and slimy if the 'fuge light is allowed to shine on them.

My 180 Setup Diagram (pic's) - Input Please

With that much space in your sump/fuge...I would just put the skimmer in the sump and keep things safer/simpler. Your diagram doesn't show unions, but make sure that you are able to shut off/disconnect/reconnect every pump from the system for cleaning. (I'm sure you've already thought of...

    Coral eating worm

You'll never get near a Eunicid worm with a turkey baster. They retract like lightning and rarely do they extend themselves fully from their holes. You can confirm you've got a Eunicid worm with a quick peek at my posted tank shots. I have one that does tend to eat Xenia, but it doesn't...

    dripping kalawasser

Based on what you're keeping in tank at the moment, your Ca/Alk usage should be pretty low. I would question that you need it at all. You'll have to mix the KALK VERY dilute in order to replace all your evaporation. (as such, you'll be dripping mostly water with just a small amount of Kalk)...

    dripping kalawasser

Careful...this isn't as simple as one might think. Are you measuring Ca/Alk levels that have led you to conclude that you need Kalk? Once you know you need it, you have to figure out how much you need. How much is controlled by how concentrated you mix it...and how fast you add it. You...

I have found the secret to catching Mantis Shrimp!

I got mine out in a similar way. Once you begin to feed them, they get less timid and start coming out for the food. In my case, I caught him when he moved into a smaller rock following a feeding session.

Advice on building a sump room

..... Exactly..yes, I've been having the same dream for a lot of years and now I get to do it. How much space do I have...? (this will really kill you...) I have as much as I want. My first draft has the room at about 7' x 7'. I think that is a decent sized space if it is well planned out.

Advice on building a sump room

I'm thinking that the room would be behind the tank, with three sides of the tank visible outside. I just don't think I can fit all that I need underneath the tank.

Advice on building a sump room

It would seem that I'm going to get my opportunity to move to a new home and install the tank of my dreams. It won't be too huge...maybe in the 200-300 gallon range. I would like to create a separate room to house all the filtration equipment, including sump. Does anyone have (or know of)...

    Septic fields and saltwate aquariums

Good point....but what about salt water? I suppose salt itself is fairly harmless, but I'm concerned that there might be some effect that I don't understand.

    Septic fields and saltwate aquariums

I'm considering moving to house on a septic system. One of the concerns with septic is the AMOUNT of water that you force into the system. We all know that RO/DI systems run a lot of waste water when filtering, but I think I could rig up something to recycle that through the RO/DI to minimize...

    yet another hair algae story

I went through all of that. In my case, a newer larger skimmer did the trick. I couldn't find anything wrong with any water parametre, changed my RO/DI filters and replaced my bulb. If you've also done all that...look to the skimmer.

    newest prizm pro skimmer?

The Prism Pro was inadequate to the task of skimming my 30 gallon Hex. It worked for a year or more, but as the tank matured I got cyano really bad. I finally replaced the Prism Pro with a Euro Reef CS6-2 and it cleaned up my system overnight! I looked at your link and the skimmer looks the...

    CPR overflow/sump?

I've got a Mag 7 running through a sqwd with that same overflow. The outputs are directed opposite each other in my hex. The flow is enough to cause the hex flow to rotate opposite every 30 seconds or so. I run it all through 1/2" pipes.

    Cyano mystery

For me...it was my skimmer. My previous skimmer seemed to work adequately for a year, then suddenly I had cyano that I couldn't get rid of. I tried absolutely everything. Purchasing a newer, larger skimmer was my last option and it cleaned up the cyano in 48 hours. You might be...

Vinegar is effective at removing Ca deposit inside of pumps. Maybe that is what they were referring to.

Do you have live mysis shrimp in your tank?

I have quite a few...although I didn't have any for the first year. I think some hitchhiked in with something and I've had them ever since. I have fish, but the mysis hide out in the shadows and under things so the fish don't catch them. On one occasion, I saw one go for a quick swim into...

Metal Halide!!! woohoo another lighting question!!

I've had good success running 220V computer fans, but feeding them with 110V. They run slowly and silently, but still move enough air to cool. You have to purchase good fans so they will start on the low voltage.
