Update..... Things seem to be going smoothly enough. In last 36 hours ammonia has dropped from 4ppm to 1ppm with nitrite remaining at 5ppm and nitrate at 80ppm. Am I right in thinking that if ammonia gets too low I should add a little extra to keep feeding the nitrites?

I got our tank for my kids with some ornamental seahorses, bubbly sea diver and fake plants. However now the novelty has worn off for them these things are gradually getting replaced for more natural looking items (some nice slate and piece of bog wood picked up from LFS). No real plants yet...

Same results... Ammonia around 6-7ppm Nitrite 5ppm Nitrate about 80ppm (to be fair could be closer to 40 because chart colours are very similar) Using API liquid. So, assuming these parameters are correct, what should I see happening soon?

I did give it a good shake but will do a retest now I think. Results to follow shortly....

Ah! Just remembered I added nutrafin cycle on day 1 as well as the ammonia. Would this explain it? If so was I right to do it?

Well I would be lying if I haven't thought about that although I'm not sure if I could go through with it. I hate to see him suffering, hence why I have really put in the effort to make conditions as best I can but it doesn't seem to be doing any good. Anyone else agree with last post?

Ok, time for an update. Before doing 50% pwc yesterday ammonia was at 0.5. Tested again today and back to the same reading. Fish is not really eating now either. Still using 5ml of pimafix every day but doesn't seem to be making any difference. Here is an up to date picture as well. Any...

Good point Bigjim! I would be surprised if it did to be honest though. Plus I live in England so it would have had plenty of rain to wash that kind of thing away! Lol

Still hanging in there! Taken your advice and got myself a proper testing set and have done 50% wc's for last 2 days. Before last change ammonia was at 1.0, nitrites also 1.0 and nitrates between 20 and 40 so still room for improvement. Will keep persevering.

Quite possible based on previous advice I have had this week about pet store products! Lol
