    Confused about heater needs

I've got a 21.6L tank with a 25W heater... The heater is constantly on but the temp doesn't seem to go above 24.5 when I need 26. I thought a 25W heater should do anything up to 25L? I live in Eastern Australia, winters are cold, summers are hot. It's winter now, the temp in my room can...

What is this? Pictures included. Cheers.

Yeah maybe, I'll just leave it for now. If it's still there when the tank is finished cycling I'll just clean it away. Unless that's the stuff that should be in the filter, and instead it's attached elsewhere? Hope not!

What is this? Pictures included. Cheers.

Hey. Fishless cycle in a 21.6 litre tank with a filter and heater. This stuff started growing less than 12 hours after I put in the ammonia. Using Ammonchlor. Water: Week one ~ Ammonia 4-5ppm, Nitrite 0ppm Week two (now) ~ Ammonia 4-5ppm, Nitrite 1.0ppm, PH 7.4, Temp. 25.6 It appears to be...

    Brown algae

Hi! I didn't cycle my first tank, and I had brown algae issues. I'm not sure if the two are related, but it doesn't matter because you're cycling anyway. I found it very annoying, every time I got rid of it, in the next 12 hours it would literally start coming back. It ended up destroying a...

    Silk plants dangerous?

How long are the silk plastic plants meant to last? Do you think they'd leech toxins into the water or something similar? One of my fake plants has a hard leaf that's a different colour from the rest so I cut it off... They also stink, they smell like seaweed and a creek... Cheers

    smells fishy

I never had this problem, until I took out the water one day and the gravel absolutely stunk, there was brown water underneath. I have 3 silk plants, and one of them smells so bad as well.

    changing substrates?

I switched gravel with my old fish once, and he seemed fine with the change. Not sure about sand though, I've heard it can trap gas pockets or something... But then again there's always some kind of downside. Just take the fish out when you do it, because he won't be able to see anything.

    Pure ammonia in Australia?

I live on the Central Coast, and I've posted around on Aussie fish forums asking if some other tank starters want to split the cost and break it up accordingly... This isn't my first tank, but I had a mishap with my last one and I have to start from scratch. I can't believe they have the balls...

    Pure ammonia in Australia?

Sorry to revive this thread but did any Aussies here try the Ammonchlor?? Becaue I found the site and it's 20 dollars for 100g... 100g lasts 18,500 litres apparently... That's good and all, but I'm probably going to use this stuff twice in my lifetime on a 20 litre tank so I'd basically be...

    Uh-oh... Mercury in the tank

Ok, thanks Maya. As I said, it's very difficult to convey emotion through type... No one can see your face! I was trying to make a joke about selling the house, didn't come out right... Or didn't type out right haha. I tried to clean it up as much as I could, I spent 3 hours with a torch and...

    Uh-oh... Mercury in the tank

Yeah haha. I was thinking of trying to sell the tank, but that would be mean... The eBay description would have to include 'may contain traces of mercury'. I've learnt my lesson in any case, don't fool around with glass mercury thermometers. I still challenge anyone here to beat my bad-luck list...

    Uh-oh... Mercury in the tank

It's too hard to convey emotion through type, you need to imagine me saying that with no ill feeling towards anyone etc. Judging from what some people have said on other websites, selling my house would be the best option! I am grateful. We're definitely off-topic now haha.

    Uh-oh... Mercury in the tank

Why don't I just rip up the carpet, sell the house, quarantine off the street and go into isolation for 5 years? I understand what you're saying, but if you ask any 60 year old they'll tell you they've broken countless mercury thermometers in their lifetime and never did anything about it - and...

    Uh-oh... Mercury in the tank

It is 100% mercury, I can assure you. Prolonged exposure will affect you yes, the amount inside a thermometer isn't really something to get frantic about. I did the best I can in cleaning it up, I'm airing my room out and taking the best measures I can. The whole 'don't touch it you'll die!'...

    Uh-oh... Mercury in the tank

Nah mate you'll be right, I think I've channeled all my bad luck into fish-keeping - if you bring some fish to cook though can't say what will happen

    Uh-oh... Mercury in the tank

Yeah, moral of the story, don't break mercury thermometers near fish tanks... In fact just don't own any at all.

    Uh-oh... Mercury in the tank

Well after vacuuming it up and spending hours trying to get every bit I then discovered you're not meant to vacuum it, and the vapour is highly toxic. But I'd rather just forget about it and move on, then call in HAZMAT and spend 2 grand to have my house ripped apart and quarantined. Who would...

    Uh-oh... Mercury in the tank

Yeah and I forgot some things too! Like a Nitrate test kit that was faulty. It's a scientific thermometer I had from high-school, here in NSW Australia you have to buy one for science, then leave it in the lab. They do it this way because they got sick of kids breaking thermo's every 12...

    Uh-oh... Mercury in the tank

Yep sounds familiar. While we're comparing bad luck let me tell you mine (maybe it will make you laugh) - Bought second hand tank, then betta fish - Light stopped working. Spent 2.5 months trying to find parts, turns out the fitting was an old model causing much confusion. - Tank leaked water...

    Uh-oh... Mercury in the tank

Yeah, it's one of those things I think I'll have to decide. Has anyone else here had nothing but problems during their fishkeeping career?

    Uh-oh... Mercury in the tank

Before you worry about the fish, don't, there is no fish. I broke a mercury filled thermometer and the silver globs went all over my desk, and possibly carpet. A piece flew into the fish tank. I emptied out the water, dug up the gravel and sure enough there was a few blobs of it at the bottom. I...

A couple of questions (Betta & tanks)

Yeah aye, I could go get PH down and all that crap but I bet you any money it would just create more problems then it would solve!

A couple of questions (Betta & tanks)

Yeah haha if I can get the test kit to work... Sigh, think I'm going to have to go pick another one... A stabilised tank should read 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites and 20 or less nitrates right? The PH is quite high, 7.4 or even higher.
  24. M

A couple of questions (Betta & tanks)

Ok. Well I took them out because they could have possibly been in the filter for years without being changed or cleaning. I also replaced the filter floss. So basically my fish died... I replaced the filter floss and did a 40% water change... The tank is now 100% water and running with the...
