The only drawback that I can think if is, the beneficial bacteria like to cling to surfaces. So by not adding any substrate cuts down on surface (subsurface) area for it to live. But it would work regardless. Its just easier to put substrate in an empty tank IMO ...

I am still using the ones that came with it, about 3 months now. I can see they will need replacing soon though

Going good Ryan, I have been working hard and getting ready for the holidays. I hope you and your family have a happy Holiday and even better New year. I will update pictures later. The tank is looking spectacular with the plants. The java moss and ferns have attached nicely to the driftwood.

I like 3 the best. Just be careful the slate doesn't slip and crush any fish. I did something similar and mine fell for whatever reason. I freaked and thankfully no fish were injured. I have since arranged my slate with less of an angle and put a rock under there .

Hi David. Just add a little pinch of ground up flake food. Sometimes that helps. Keep up the faith, you're defiantly making progress

Glad you were able to return the grapevine.

From the picture , it appears to possibly be grapevine. That would rot in time. Just my opinion.

Subscribing to this thread. I am planning a shrimp only planted tank. I have read on other threads, that shrimp have minimal bioload. But from experience, more plants keep nitrates down. You could sell some RCS. They go quick on here.
