    cycling a salt water tank

I know all about doing the water changes...and she's doing that. But, I thought that I could help jump start the nitrate levels by giving her some of my good bacteria from my tank. I just wasn't sure if the bacteria are the same in each type of tank. She's tested her tank and it looks to be...

    cycling a salt water tank

Good afternoon! I'm hoping someone can help me with a salt water question. I have a completely cycled, disease free 55 gallon fw tank. My mother is starting a salt water tank and it is currently in the middle of cycling. She has a clown and the ammonia level is very high. I was wondering if I...

Thanks An t-iasg! BTW where do you do your fish shopping? We're in the same neck of woods and I'm always looking for a good fish store in the area.

    Red Tailed Black Sharks?

Another thing to add...I think that as long as you only have 1 shark you're fine. I do believe that they are only aggressive to their own kind. I think I read somewhere that you either keep 1 or keep a large number (like 6 of them) together. I say get one. They're great fish! Mine loves to swim...

    Red Tailed Black Sharks?

I have a red tailed shark and it doesn't bother anyone. Once in awhile, one of the Tiger Barbs starts nosing around his "house" and he chases it away. I don't have tetras so cannot comment on your exact situation but my experience has been positive with mine. I love my shark. His name is Bruce...

    Fish treats

The brine shrimp at the lfs were live. They were swimming around in a plastic bag. There were so many of them that I couldn't imagine feeding them all at one time. I thought I had read somewhere in these forums that some people feed their fish earth worms. So, I thought it sounded like a good...

    Fish treats

Now that my tank is cycled and established, I'd like to give my new fish friends a treat now and again. Here's what is in the tank: 6 Tiger Barbs 3 Gold Barbs 3 Clown Loaches 3 Otos 2 "Julli" Corys 1 Dojo Loach I found a couple of small fishing worms that had made their way to the top of th...

    1 aggressive tiger barb

I'm just worried that the other fish will get stressed out about it. Their color doesn's seem as vibrant orange as the bigger one. Is this a sign of stress or do they not develop nice color until they're a bit older?

    1 aggressive tiger barb

No fin damage. I don't see much nipping just a lot of chasing.

    1 aggressive tiger barb

Good evening all! I've come to ask some advice on what to do with a bully. I have 6 tiger barbs and when I bought them, one was noticeable bigger than the rest. He didn't seem to mind leading the pack around and for the first week, they were fine. Now, he is being a big bully. He is always...

    Your thoughts on Bio-Spira

So, then I gather that it is okay to add Bio-Spira to a tank that already has fish in it. Puffer--I agree that cycling with the fish in the tank is cruel, that's why I'm trying to make it as easy on the fish as possible. So far, after having fish for 9 days, I have had no measurable amount of...

Good or Bad? Pet's Mart Top Fin 55 Gal. Starter Kit

I just bought a 55 gallon tank with lights at PetSmart for $99.99. Call them and ask if they have any. The light will not be any good for growing plants, but some of the fake ones look pretty good! HTH

    Your thoughts on Bio-Spira

Thanks for the response overstocker...a few questions for ya! 1. Were you mid cycle when you added the BS? (hate to keep typing Bio Spira) I am 9 days into the cycle, 7 of which involve fish. 2. Did you use a double dose? I'm still confused as to why I would have to use a double dose. 3. What...

    Your thoughts on Bio-Spira

Thanks TankGirl! I'm going to leave things as they are. The lfs confirmed my test results and said that with 55 gallons of water, the little fish would take a while longer to produce enough ammonia to cause a spike. Plus, with the plants and the crystals, it'll take a while for ammonia to show...

    Your thoughts on Bio-Spira

Thanks for all the info! I do have a mixture of carbon and ammonia fighting crystals in my filter. I run an Emporer 400 and this is what was recommended for as the filter media. Could this be why the ammonia is not registering? Could this impede my cycle? Maybe I'm trying to take care of too...

    Your thoughts on Bio-Spira

The test kit is brand new...bought it the same time I bought the tank last weekend. I check the water everyday and so far nothing. I am not using any ammo-stuff because I do not have any ammonia. I do not want the fish to stress out through the cycling process. That's why I was asking about the...

    Your thoughts on Bio-Spira

I'm a bit confused...someone please offer more info. I've done a lot of reading and I understand the nitrogen cycle. Gunnie says So, how do I get my tank cycled? I thought you added a few fish, waited for the ammonia levels to rise, then watch the nitrate and nitrite levels raise t ensure that...
