    Very sick guppy

Yes very familiar with it, tank has been cycled and running for about 5 years, we barely touch the filter, but if it is rinsed it's in water just taken from the tank and never all at once. Parameters are good, ammonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrates around 5 (it's a planted tank). The isolation tank...

    Very sick guppy

So bizzare. I think she was weakened and stressed by the pregnancy then maybe has some fin rot? Her tail looks like someone took a bite out of the middle of it but she was alone when it happened. Whatever it is she looks otherwise perfect today! I thought she was a goner a couple of days ago

    Very sick guppy

This afternoon she's mostly upright and eating again! I'll keep her in the hospital tank for a few days to make sure but she's looking so much better

    Very sick guppy

Thanks for the replies crystalbettas, I've put her in a shallow tank, she delivered another 7 fry last night, only one survived so it has been moved to the main tank. She's trying to turn herself the right way up today but her tail is looking awful so I've tried a bit of aquarium salt in her...

    Very sick guppy

I took her out straight away, any idea what has happened to her? I'm hoping it's not going to kill the other fish... perhaps something to do with birth? she's still hanging in there, poor thing [emoji17]

    Very sick guppy

I have a guppy floating on her side with rapid gill/mouth movements. She had been hanging around the top of the tank most for a few days and wasn't very active but I thought she was perhaps just ready to drop fry (and I believe she has, I have new tiny fry in the tank and she looks way less boxy...

    Help! just getting started

hi :) What is a fuge?? We live in Australia. For lights I think we're all good, we have that planted tank in a window and it is growing like mad. There are lights but both bulbs have blown, so no worries there. We have a heater, not sure we need it at this time of year (coming in to summer, it...

    Help! just getting started

We have a very well established 42 ish (160L) freshwater planted tank that pretty much looks after itself and we're looking for a new project :) we have a few small tanks, one is a 15ishG on a stand which I would love to turn into a small saltwater setup. What do you think are the minimum...

    Pure ammonia in Australia?

yeah pretty rude, definitely cheaper to drive there and get it, I considered that too, we're a couple of hours south of Sydney but the drive with 2 young kids was so appealing I decided I'd prefer daily water changes for a while :)

    Pure ammonia in Australia?

I decided the same thing, especially when I saw the postage. We ended up taking some of the substrate, filter medium and water from our yabby tank (those things are grotty so plenty of bacteria there!), ran the tank for a few days then started slowly adding fish. It meant we needed lots of water...

Poor Genevieve :( Anything that could cause this?

No there were only a few other guppies and a small school of neon tetras in with her and I had never seen any of them be at all aggressive. it was a neat little hole, looked like a tear in her skin (which is what makes us suspect the filter). Just thought it was best to check if there were any...

Poor Genevieve :( Anything that could cause this?

So my poor little guppy had part of her guts sticking out a hole in her side. The only thing we can think could have caused it is a run in with the filter intake (we have lost another guppy who was stuck to the filter intake cover so it was obvious what happened to her). We have fixed the filter...

Let's take a poll: How many members here eat fish?

We eat a lot of fish here, in fact when my daughter was 1 we took her to an aquarium in Sydney and she kept saying "fish! Yum!" lol kept the tourists entertained.

Hahaha my son shared a whole peanut butter sandwich with his goldfish, you turn your back on them for a second and they're "helping"

    Horror story!!

When my cousin was little he used to take his goldfish out of the tank to give it some love everyday :) his mum couldn't work out why his fish kept dying until she saw him one day sitting on the floor with the fish in one hand gently stroking it with his finger. She had to explain that it's not...

    Pure ammonia in Australia?

lol Ken, unlikely seeing as it is truly the local shop here - about 3 mins from my house :) generally they seem pretty good but some of them are just plain clueless, I guess you'll get that, especially with the range of pet stuff they sell, some are bound to know nothing about fish.
