Post ich skin condition on mbuna cichlid? (pic)

I guess a bacteria or fungal infection is possible. It does seem unlikely to me as the ich was so mild when I caught it. If it is bacteria how would I treat it? Whatever it is, it does not appear to be raised. It actually looks like the color was rubbed off of them. Normally I do approx...

Post ich skin condition on mbuna cichlid? (pic)

Three of my young mbuna had visable ich on them. Before it spread to the rest of the tank I turned the heat up and added salt. I'm now 6 days into treatment (I was told to keep the heat up for 10 days) and the ich APPEARS to be gone. However, now the fish who had it are "splotchy" looking. All...

    Is color play sand safe?

Maybe I will mix the Tihitian moon sand with the cichlid sand. I need the buffering ability. Or maybe fine black gravel. I used regular play sand under the cichlid sand in the other tank but and it does kind of show through. The fish love to move the sand around. Not sure if they would do the...

    Is color play sand safe?

I'm setting up a tank for my frontosas who are currently in mbuna tank. I want to use the same sand that is in the mbuna tank (I forgot the name but it is a black and white cichlid sand that buffers the water). However, at $28/bag I definately need to mix it with something. I was thinking...

Used tank came with lots of stuff for salt water set up

I've been thinking about it and It all sounds much more complicated than my HOB filter. I'm not sure what a powerhead even does, but my tank seems fine without it. Besides, I don't know how safe it would be after all that salt water.

Used tank came with lots of stuff for salt water set up

I got a great deal on a 72 gal bow front tank. I plan to use it for fresh water fish, but the previous owner used it as a salt water tank. It came with lots of stuff I can't identify (and don't think I can use). According to the add I have: 2 standard power heads 1 rotational power head...

    Moving a mbuna tank

Now that I finially have my mbuna tank just the way I want it I've decided to move it. I bought a bigger tank (72 gal) and want to put it where my 55 gal tank now stands. The 55 gal needs to be moved to the next room. I will be buying a new stand for it. First, I obviously want to cause as...

updating a "hang on back" type filter

I have an aqua tech 30-60 "hang on back" type filter for my 55 gal tank. This was the origional filter I started with. (A few weeks ago I was having trouble with it so I added a second filter, but now this one is working fine again so I want to keep both). The new filter looks very nice and...

    Feeding a mixed tank

Thank you for all of your very informative replies. Glad to hear I'm feeding them the right thing. Yes, the fronts are much less aggressive at feeding time, so my daughter and I do it together, one of us feeds the mbuna at the opposite end of where the fronts are and then the other drops some...

How aggressive are these mbuna? (Pics)

Ok, I will keep an eye on him. I thought Auratus had yellow on them. This one has no trace of yellow at all which is why I thought it was a parallelus.

    Feeding a mixed tank

As I just mentioned in another thread, I have a tank of mbuna mixed with two frontosa. I know that this is a bad set up, but I let the pet store guy convince me that it is ok... I'm regretting it because although everyone is getting along great so far, I am causing myself stress. My only...

How aggressive are these mbuna? (Pics)

Thank you for your reply. Several people have said Johnnie, but if you look at the pics of a maingano they look extremely similar. The reason I'm not convinced that it is a Johnnie is that when I stocked my tank all the fish I bought were approx the same size. Nearly all of them are now...

How aggressive are these mbuna? (Pics)

I posted pics of two mbuna that I have in my tank (on another forum) asking for ID. The blue/black fish was thought to be a Johnnie and the black/white was thought to be an Auratus... both very aggressive from what I have been told. After further research, I think that they are actually a...

    Longest fishless cycle ever?

My nitrites were that high for weeks. Did one 70% water change about a week ago and nitrite test continued to turn purple as soon as it hit the bottom of the tube. I didn't want to keep messing with it. Over the past few days I've cut the amonia doses down a bit. The nitrite seems to be...

    Longest fishless cycle ever?

I've been cycling 2 tanks. One I started on Feb 4, the second on Feb 10. It took about 10 days before I saw any nitrite and now my nitrite level has been 5+ for atleast 3 weeks, if not more. (Sure wish I had kept a log book). One tank now has tons of nitrate.. the other tank has some, but not...

    Parrotts with Mbuna?

Yeah, kind of figured that. And I'm assuming they'd be way to big for a 16 gal tank (I'm planning a few dwarf puffers anyway). Thanks.

    Parrotts with Mbuna?

I have a 55 gal, 4 foot long tank that I'm praying is nearly done cycling. Planning to stock with "least agressive mbuna". Is it possible to have a few parrots? When I decided on Mbuna I had never seen a parrot, but would love to add a few (only if possible and safe for them).

    Common Newbie Pitfalls

Definately don't assume the guy at the pet store knows what he's talking about...even if he's the owner. If you are doing a fishless cycle DO NOT let him/her sell you an "instant cycle" product. It could mess you up for days!
