    Ghost and Bamboo Shrimp

See your other thread concerning bamboo shrimp. Fish in general tend to see shrimp as food so most FW dwarf shrimp tend to hide in tanks with fish. Ghost shrimp I've seen tend to be a little braver than other shrimp ... But if they're hiding they know they're fish food.

    Show off your shrimp tank!

My two bamboo shrimp will fan 24 / 7 ... Practically non-stop. The only exceptions I've seen in my tank is during maintenance or when they hide in preparing to molt. A week old tank will generally not have a mature enough filter .. You need an established filter ... Say after two months which...

First tank; little white worms everywhere

Those are your most likely culprits ... Plants can introduce a slew of things into an tank. Planaria and by the other description nematodes are unsightly, but harmless. Don't be surprised if you also see what looks like little wihite dots moving about ...Copepods etc. All can be a part of a...

Back from Hiatus .. update on Shrimp Tank

Well, after a Hiatus to detox from AA ... actually it just turned out to be a busy summer and start to the school year ... I'm back:thumb:. I did checkout the site every other day or two so I guess it wasn't a true Hiatus. Wanted to share a pic I just took of my 20gal Long shrimp tank, with...

    Canister or HOB??

+1 with Iscotty. Personally, with a 20gal, just go with an HOB.

    Disease spreading questions

Well, figure if your hands are still wet as you go from tank to tank, I'd say almost definitely. If your being told not to use the same nets for different tanks to avoid disease by moving around some contaminated water, then why should wet hands be any different.

Can too much filter media have a negative effect?

Ok.. So it sounds like the water from the input is first coming in contact with the top basket, then filters down before going back up in the output. Try putting the sponges at the top... You really can't go wrong switching it up.

Can too much filter media have a negative effect?

With this arrangement it doesn't surprise me the floss pads are getting clogged and the sponges cleaner. I'm Assuming in a Sun Sun the water moves from the bottom of the canister towards the top like in a fluval and the media baskets are stacked one on top the other. If so, I'd switch the...

    Recommended filtration rate

Agree with BBradbury ... at 55-60gal rated filter for a 29gal tank should be more than enough. The exceptions might be with very messy ... very high bio-load fish. In either case, water change's the key.

    Switching filters in same tank?

I'd say that should be fine ... it's how I would switch from one filter type to another. You basically insta-cycled your new filter.

    Bacteria

As long as the filter pad stayed wet and it was less than say an hour, you should be good to go.

    Its shark week!!!!

Yes ... it's possible it's still around ... a Lazarus Taxon. There's compelling evidence, but until one is caught, it'll still be considered extinct.

    vacation

As long as your tank is established, don't even bother worrying ... Feed then a PWC the day before and you should be fine ... barring you have some exotic fish that absolutely require daily feeding and maintenance. I've gone through several 4-7 day trips and your tank should be as you left it...

tiger barbs spinning and biting eachother?

This is normal TB behavior ... They establish a hierarchy and who becomes the alpha of the shoal. You may even notice their colors changing.

How do YOU acclimate your fishes?

Drip acclimation as mentioned:thumb:. I don't even bother with any other method.

    Fluval C4 vs AquaClear 50

Not worth the hassle, it's not going to give you anything more than the AC-50 is currently doing. I've heard good things about the C4 series ... but not enough to "upgrade"

Kids got goldfish from a fair

One down. My daughther's must have jumped out. ?Nowhere to be found ... That I was not expecting. Well... At east my son immediately offered her his goldfish so she's happy. For now it's PWC's which she'll help me with ... She wants it, she'll have to help maintain it in some way ... Even for...

Kids got goldfish from a fair

The family went to one of those carnival fairs with the rides and sure enough, my son spots the ping pong ball in a little vase for a goldfish (common) game:facepalm:. Just my luck he and my daughter each win one ... except you know no one's going to win in the end ... nothing good can come...

    Red cherry shrimp

More like ... what can't I feed them? Practically, if you can feed it to a fish, you can feed it to a shrimp. Aside from algae wafers, vegetables like spinach leaves, broccoli and or zucchini (among others), consider Hikari Crab Cuisine. It's rich in nutrients to aid them during molting. My...

    Beach sand?

It's tempting, but unless you know for sure the sand is pristine, I wouldn't risk it. I used to think beach sand should be fine ... it's natural! Then one day, I saw a bunch of people going off roading with their jeeps, dune buggies, tricked out trucks etc. Needless to say, I could see oily...

    Bamboo shrimp ok?

If your tank meets the following criteria, your good to go. 1. Is the tank cycled and at least 4 months old? 2. Do you have either an HOB or canister filter? 3. Do you have plants, rocks or DW tall enough for bamboo shrimp to perch on? The first criteria is the most critical as they filter...

    anorexic bamboo shrimp

As was mentioned by Scottyhorse, your tank is not mature enough for bamboo shrimp. They feed off microbes that colonize mature filter media, and fan it out off the current. If you can't rehome it, your best bet is to supplement it's diet with crushed up algae wafers etc. Just google...
