    lighting questions...

i had the 2x40 current usa over my tank with some very happy soft corals. i really dotn think it would be a problem with your GSP, IME they are very adaptable. other than that, other inverts (as far as shrimp, snails etc) and fish should be fine with that amount of lighting. although i am...

actually, on doing more research, it seems that if you order the lights with the 150W HQI they come with a 175w ballast, which overdrives the lights somehow and decreases their lifespan (im not sure how this works). and i cant find any 175w HQI bulbs. suggestions?

well im thinking astheticly (sp?) it might look a little strange... i dont know about the coral's reaction, that is the spectrum that they utilize. i think its so cheap because 1) its a warehouse direct site and 2) its not a real common name, like coralife- when you buy something like that your...

    clownfish coexistence

i have a large ocellaris who is about 4 years old, and i assume female since she never had any other clownfish tank mates. right now she is housed in my 44g corner tank with only a pseudochromis. my issue is i really want a pair of clowns. i am going to be upgrading to a 55g, and obviously my...

well, i decided to follow lando's example and take the MH plunge... eventually i may be ready for sps and i wouldnt want to have to upgrade then! lando- did you get the free bulbs with the light? they said they would send 2 20,000k HQI's and 2 96w PC actinics with mine- i'm thinking this is...

thanks for the link Brodie, that site has some great deals! which setup did he buy specificly? the link just brings you to the site. the thing is, im really not interested in anemones or acropora or even lps. i really just like the softies, so i really want the lower light levels. but thanks...

    lighting

i am in the process of setting up a 55g (standard 48in size) and am debating on which way to go with the lights, and i have serious budget constraints. option 1 48" Tek Light: 2-54W T5 HO Fluorescents which would give a combined 108 watts to penetrate the 24" for $189 option 2 Coralife 48"...

Bought a USED SW tank today need advice.

the turbos probably wont touch the cyano- few things will eat it. i would suggest getting a small powerhead in that tank to help with circulation. ive found IME that the best way to get rid of cyano is increased circulation and regular water changes with RO/DI water.

Help, reef is at 90 degrees!

when my temp tanks rise i blow a fan right across the top of the water. evaporative cooling works wonders, just keep an eye on the salinity as this can make water evaporate faster than normal. good luck!!

    silicone

is it ok to use the kind of silicone they sell at home depot for like bathroom sealing in my tank? i just made my own sump, and i would like to seal around the baffles with it. otherwise i will have to buy the special clear aquarium silicone and thats just darn expensive. tia!

    What brand salt mix??

MT79 and Mbeef61 are certianly right- i had the exact opposite happen to me. i regularly use IO, and went to switch to Tropic Marin. corals and inverts HATED it, i beleive that it was just the change they hated- not nessescarly the salt, since IMO Tropic Marin is the best salt you can come by...

Inverts that eat green hair algae?????

argh amen to that anemone dying comment... its worth your time to discover the source. but you could also try adding macro algae to outcompete the hair algae. that worked in my tank, i just stuffed my fuge with cheato to eat up extra nutrients.

    help- plumbing!!!

thanks for the reply ellisz, so i guess closed loop is not what im looking for. ok so do i have to match the gph of the overflow exactly to the gph of the return pump? accounting for head pressure or not? what about power outages and an overflow- how would i tell it to shut off if i loose...

    Introducing...

beautiful fish!!! best of luck with him! the reef theory im not sure i agree with. ive seen these tangs do absolutely fine for long periods of time in FO tanks. i would go with a reef tank being more maintained and stable, as a general statement. interesting tho!

    couple questions

yes, it was just the fish. they were fed flake in the morning, rotating between prime reef and hikari small pellets, and a frozen blender mash in the evening (included brine shrimp, zoe vitamins, mysis shrimp, nori, and finely chopped table shrimp). i asked my mom about the cleaning agents...
