    Firemouth ph and temp?

78 - 80 degrees is perfect. There are many reasons not to manipulate the pH. While slightly acidic would be the ideal natural environment, the fish are adaptable and will do better with a stable pH in your range.

    Cycling- Nitrates@zero

If it's only been about 2 weeks, I think the source of the problem is that you haven't given nature enough time to take its course. I've cycled 3 tanks from scratch (always fish in) and it usually takes about 30 - 45 days to see nitrites and another 15 days before I see solid nitrate...

    opinions sought Blue Acara

Is the question whether or not the rivulatus was a better choice than the blue acara? In most cases I think you made the right choice. Most of the fish in your tank are generally mild in their aggression levels, with the exception of the salvini which are a step higher. I've had a yellow...

    Pike Cichlid ID

It's hard to ID the exact species from the picture. It looks like a lugubris group pike and you're probably looking at 12 - 18 inches full size at maturity. The pike in the photo looks fairly young still and has not filled out much. He'll be a beauty when he does? Its difficult to ID most...

    My first Oscar tank! :)

Freeze dried food is typically a much lower nutritional value than a quality pellet. They are also harder on the intestines. For example, blood worms have an exoskeleton that needs to be digested. Constipation can be a result. Economically, you'll do better with pellets as well.

    180 gallon CA/SA stocking ideas

I understand the green terror a little differently. Here is my take. The true green terror is the Andinoacara stalsbergi. These guys are pretty rare and most are WC or F1's available from premium fish sources. This has been referred to as the "white Saum". I have 6 of them at the moment and...

New green terror just tried to jump out...

Agreed. This doesn't sound like anything serious. Scales go flying every time I introduce a new fish and they all look normal again in a few days. I've seen some large gouges on my Oscar when he spooks himself and they heal nicely with no intervention.

Fair is fair. They definitely have personality!

    What has Bags of Personality??

I own a big fat crybaby oscar and can't argue that at all. I've been told they are more interactive when they are kept alone. They are semi-interactive when food is involved. Cons? Really? Not the worst, but hardly what I would call a fish with a lot of personality. I thnk clown loaches...

    Columnaris!?!?

It will just take longer for the salt to dissolve naturally and affect the chemistry of the water as desired. Stirring is a catalyst. If you have excellent flow in the tank, it would help, otherwise it just takes longer.

    Columnaris!?!?

Yes, it's safe, but not all at once. Dose it over 12 - 24 hours for a more gradual introduction.

    My stock

No - that was directed at the poster saying it wasn't large enough.

What size tank are you suggesting for a rainbow shark? I've never seen one over 6".

    Columnaris!?!?

I don't see that being effective at all here. Salt baths are primarily designed to remove exterior parasites and serve a purpose in some case. Columnaris can survive for weeks in the water column without a host - you need to treat the tank.

    Columnaris!?!?

Water changes are part of the treatment and will be explained in the Fungus Guard instructions.

    Columnaris!?!?

Add 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons slowly over 24 hours. When you do water changes, redose for the water you removed.

    Columnaris!?!?

Lowering the water temp is good. It shouldn't be too hard to get aquarium or kosher salt, that should be your next step. You need salt and the medication asap. Melafix is completely useless for this application.

    Columnaris!?!?

It will continue to get worse until you treat it. I gave you the best treatment advice I have. Have you taken any steps yet? I wouldn't be concerned about the poop right now or the eggs.

    Columnaris!?!?

Here is what I did for my father's tank about a year ago when he introduced columnaris from a LFS purchase. 1. I lowered the temperature to about 72-73 degrees to slow down the bacterial infection. 2. Dosed the tank with Fungus Clear by Jungle (I think its owned by Tetra these days) following...

    Who can ID this beauty

Ok, I thought some one would have got it right away. Guess that nuchal disaster was throwin everybody off. It's a run of the mill (albeit ugly) male Hypselecara temporalis. This one was photographed at the mystic aquarium in Connecticut. Yes, right by mystic pizza.

    Who can ID this beauty

Is that a trick question? Cichlidae is the family. I think you are looking for the genus and I'm afraid that would be a rather large giveaway.

    Who can ID this beauty

trimaculatus? Getting warmer, but still the wrong continent.
