    Pale Jack Dempsey, Possible Overstock?

Ah thank you, I had not accounted for the first "pouting" as the potential problem!

    Pale Jack Dempsey, Possible Overstock?

Hello All, not sure if these forums are still active or not. Returning after several years. I have recently (3 weeks ago) upgraded my 55 gallon to a 75 gal aquarium. The 55 gal was home to a Jack Dempsey (Unsure of gender) a pleco and a rainbow shark (I'm aware of the incompatibility from...

    Restocking Help

So I've had a tragedy pretty sure it was bloat that killed off a majority of my stock and I'm looking at restocking my 55gal in the next week or so. I know that some of my fish aren't ideal matches but was wondering if there were compatible cichlids to fill the rest of the tank. Right now the...

    Nitrate help

So I've had a total of four fish deaths now, the first one I thought was random but then after two more today I tested my water, ammonia and nitrites were 0 but my nitrates were off the charts, I changed 5 gallons yesterday of my 55 gal tank. Then this morning I changed another twenty with no...

    Mysterious death

I'm not sure what the average life span is either. I've attached a picture for diagnostic purposes. Not sure about parasite I haven't introduced new food and my other fish seem fine.

    Mysterious death

So I've had my albino bn for about two or three years now, and I came today to find him suddenly dead. My parameters are okay other than a nitrate spike and algae bloom which I'm treating with pwcs. My guess is that he died of constipation but not sure what would cause this? His stomach was...

Is a 40g filter too large for a 20g tank

If he is having fish deaths, then you don't want anything from his tank in yours. What they meant to say was that if you had a neighbor with a healthy established aquarium then you should seed with some media (gravel, decoractions, etc.) With those small fish you shouldn't experience many...

Pleco & Bristle Nose Catfish Fin Issues... :(

Someone else may chime in with another theory, that's the nice thing about the forum you get alot of different input from people with different opinions. I wouldn't rule out nipping just because it is a sudden issue though, fish are complex creatures. For example, I have a 55 gal cichlid setup...

Pleco & Bristle Nose Catfish Fin Issues... :(

My guess would be that the tiger barbs are getting nippy as they are pretty notorious for it, however if you are able to keep them in a larger group of say six or eight they are more likely to leave the other fish alone. Also for future reference, common Pleco's can easily grow to a foot and a...

    Lost fish! Warning!

Assuming you don't have an Oscar or even more aggressive fish in your 29 gal then yea that would work fine.

    Lost fish! Warning!

My male yellow lab took a couple of chunks out of my striped peacocks tail one day so I had to move him. I would say it's probably a case by case basis but make sure you have a back up plan in case.

    Lost fish! Warning!

Yea my Peacock eel used to like to swim inside my Aztec bubble head, but I was always nervous because alot of the times the inside of things like that aren't prepared with as much caution as the outside. Thought he might get cut or something.

    How long...

I was wondering if dominance had something to do with it. Because he is the sub dominant.

    How long...

How long will it take for my male Kenyi to completely change from blue to yellow? He is about 3" and started showing yellow more than a month ago now, but he seems to be stuck in like a bluish yellow mixture.

    my cichlid mix

We need to know your tank size to answer if this is compatable or not. Also make sure you only stock 1/3 of your total stock at a time. ( Some people say less but as long as you are properly cycled this shouldn't be a problem.)

    Identification

Almost looks like a female kenyi to me. Is there any striping on the fish, there is a slight glare that makes it hard to see.

    New 75 gallon tank

I second the Fluval 405 suggestion.

    fish suggestions?

If you are going the route of pleco's you should look into a Bristlenose pleco because they only grow to about 5", where as commons grow up to a foot and a half. As for other fish suggestions, are you planning on centerpiece for the aquarium?

    EMERGENCY!! jewels are not eating!

I think you may have a couple different issues at work here. The first being that adding sixteen fish to a tank at once is alot, so you are probably experiencing a mini cycle. If you could post your water parameters that would be helpful, temp, nitrites, nitrates, ammonia. Generally as long as...

    New tank mates! Yeah!

I second this, did you paint that wall? If so its really good.

    Medusa bristlenose pleco

The reason that the BN is such a popular choice is because it only grows to about 5" where as the common pleco's stores usually sell max out at about a 1'6". So as long as his size his near that of a normal BN I would say go ahead. However you should really only buy the fish if you like it, if...

    Sand or Gravel

How deep it is, is mostly up to you. In my aquariums my substrate comes up just above the bottom border of the tank, then shallow in some spots and higher in others. The general rule of thumb is between 1.5 - 2 lbs per gallon.

    Sand or Gravel

As long as you have established filter media, it shouldn't be too much to worry about, maybe just an additional PWC the week you change. Good luck!

    Sand or Gravel

I've seen a method where you fill up a 2 liter bottle with sand that has been pre-rinsed a little, then lower it into the tank right side up until it fill up with water. Then tip it over so the sand falls out but the dust particles are trapped in the bottle. Just do this after you have removed...
